October 19, 2019 | Football
Berkeley, CA. – Big plays on both sides of the ball in the most crucial moments helped key Oregon State to a road victory against Cal at California Memorial Stadium, 21-17, on Saturday afternoon.
A clutch touchdown drive by the Beavers with 4:41 remaining in the game would end up being the difference as Oregon State drove 80 yards and capped off the drive with a 13-yd run into the end zone from running back B.J. Baylor which sealed the game.
On offense, senior quarterback Jake Luton finished 18-of-34 for 174 yards and two touchdowns against the Pac 12's No. 2 pass defense. The run game was led by senior Artavis Pierce who totaled 80 rushing yards with one receiving touchdown on the day. Junior Isaiah Hodgins picked up 36 yards on five catches including a second quarter touchdown for his 10th score of the year. The game was almost identical for both teams as they each finished the game with 282 total yards.
The Beavers got on the board first with a pair of methodical drives. Luton connected with reliable running back Artavis Pierce for a seven-yard strike to go up 7-0. Next, Oregon State responded with a four-yard pass from Luton to Hodgins to lead 14-0 before Cal would respond quickly.
The Bears made the most of Oregon State's miscues in the second half as the Bears used a 69-yard drive including three penalties on the Beavers to draw within four of the lead.
Another trip into the end zone for the Bears turned the momentum in their favor that made it 17 answered points for Cal. Cal went 50 yards in three plays to lead by three heading into the fourth quarter. It would dominate the third quarter by outgaining the Beavers 142-20 but Oregon State was far from throwing in the towel.
