Beavers take home learning experiences from Vancouver Lake
PORTLAND, Ore. – Oregon State men's rowing made their way North for the Portland Fall Classic at Vancouver Lake early Sunday morning.
The four Beaver boats were split between the Men's Collegiate Division I Varsity 8+ and the Junior Varsity 8+ categories. They were the only entrants in their respective divisions, and both groups put in the water at 9:00 a.
The first place varsity boat, coxed by Casey Kinaan and crewed by Roman Pjajka, Alex Carlton, Tanner Mathews, Jacob Randall, Zach Niedermeyer, Jacoby Wilson, Hunter Rust, and Nick Taylor finished the course with a time 16:21.084.
Coming in second on the Varsity side was the boat coxed by Ben Garrison and crewed by Max McDonald, Adam Montoya, Cal Labonski, Tyler Gray, Samuel Foltz, Tristan Gavin, Ben La Fond, and Drew Keller. On the course they trailed the lead boat by just over 20 seconds but were assessed a 1:00 penalty for missing a buoy, finishing with a final time of 17:42.992.
"This race is always a learning experience for the team. Next weekend we can't have any missteps when racing one of the best teams in the country," said Beaver head coach Gabe Winkler. "Our standard is high and I think we were a little below it today. Luckily, we have a week to select the best guys for the top 3 8+'s at the Head of the Lake."
