Oregon State ready for final meet of the season.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Beavers travel to Federal Way, Washington for the Pac-12 Championships this week. The four-day meet begins Wednesday, February 27th and finishes up on Saturday, March 2nd.
Oregon State head coach Jennifer Buffin said the main plan for the Beavers is the same as it was on day one of the season, compete.
"The message is the same," Buffin said. "Continue to get better and make sure everyone is contributing to the team. Everyone knows that they have a role to play this weekend in every situation. It's an exciting time and it tends to make you think too much, but we're focused on keeping everyone on track."
As far as preparation for their races, Buffin says all the Beavers are ready and know what they need to do on an individual level. As the last chance to post a top time for the year, the Beavers are excited to face the challenge.
"Most of the preparation work is done," Buffin said. "We've been talking about it all season, really trying to use every week of the season to work and get to this point to where we are ready heading into this competition. We still need to be at practice, still need to have the right mindset, but it's shifted from the grind of the season to more exact execution and putting the details together."
Oregon State will be one of the youngest teams at the Pac-12 championships as they bring 14 underclassmen, 10 of them being freshmen.
"The transformation of the team from day one to where we are now is really a success already in my book," Buffin said. "I have loved watching the way all of our freshmen and sophomores matured throughout the season. Now it's on all of us, including myself, to really enjoy this last week. Put the little details together, compete all weekend, and really have fun together."
With such a young roster the past two seasons Buffin has implemented a 'buddy' system before the Pac-12 championships to help those that haven't experienced the hectic and competitive event prepare themselves.
"Felicia (Anderson) explained it best to the team," Buffin said. "She'll be the first to tell you she wasn't prepared for her first Pac-12's her freshman year. But the last couple of years we've implemented a sort of 'big sis / little sis' dynamic going into Pac-12's where I've asked them to all pair up with someone that has been to the Pac-12's before and really just talk to them about the experience."
TV coverage of day three will air on Friday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. MT on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Washington. Day Four coverage is on Saturday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m. PT/7:30 p.m. MT on Pac-12 Network.
