February 09, 2019 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Stephen Thompson Jr., Ethan Thompson and Tres Tinkle combined for 60 points in Oregon State's 79-71 win over California on Saturday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
Thompson Jr. scored a game-high 21 points, going 8-for-14 from the field and 3-for-8 from beyond the arc. Thompson finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Tinkle added 19 points, four rebounds and three steals.
The Beavers (15-8, 7-4 Pac-12) held a slim 73-71 lead with 1:45 to play before scoring the final six points of the game.
Thompson was fouled and made both free throws, then a California 3-pointer was off the mark on the subsequent possession. Kylor Kelley put back his own missed shot with 40 seconds left to give the Beavers a 77-71 lead and a comfortable cushion. Thompson iced it with two more free throws with 20 seconds on the clock.
Oregon State led early, but California went on a 10-2 run, fueled by seven points from Darius McNeill, to take a 14-11 lead at the 13:11 mark.
A 10-0 surge by the Beavers, capped by a 3-pointer from Thompson Jr. just before the halftime buzzer, put Oregon State ahead 38-32 at the break.
Justice Sueing and McNeill led California (5-18, 0-11 Pac-12) with 16 points apiece.
