Beavers Fall in First Round of Civil War
January 24, 2020 | Women's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. – Freshman Taylor Jones put up 21 in her Civil War debut, but the No. 7 Oregon State women's basketball team fell to No. 4 Oregon 76-64 Friday evening in Eugene.
"That is a really good team," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "It was a fun crowd and a fun atmosphere like we knew it would be. The bottom line was execution. They moved the ball freely for stretches, and we didn't hit shots in response. I'm pleased with the way that we battled back – we learned some things about ourselves tonight. This program is built on toughness and heart, and we hung in there to give ourselves a chance."
The two teams will face off again on Sunday in Corvallis, at a sold out Gill Coliseum. The Civil War Series is brought to you by PacificSource Health Plans, Spirit Mountain Casino, Safeway-Albertsons, your local Toyota Dealers and First Interstate Bank.
Jones went 10-for-12 from the floor and tallied two blocks. Destiny Slocum tallied 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. Aleah Goodman recorded 11 points, while Kennedy Brown pulled down 12 rebounds.
Mikayla Pivec went for eight points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Beavers (16-3, 4-3 Pac-12) shot 49 percent in the game, while holding the Ducks (16-2, 6-1 Pac-12) to 44 percent shooting.
The Oregon State defense clamped down early on, as the Beavers used an early 10-0 run to go in front 14-10 at the first quarter media break. The Ducks responded by hitting their final four field goal attempts of the opening frame to go in front 25-18.
Oregon was able to extend the advantage from there, heading to the break up 45-29.
The Ducks went in front by 20 in the third quarter, but the Beavers used a 12-2 run to get back within 10, before Oregon took a 16-point advantage into the closing period. The Beavers again used a surge to cut into the advantage, scoring 11 unanswered points in a stretch of less than two minutes to bring the deficit to 67-57.
Oregon State got within seven with just over three minutes to play, but could not get any closer, as the Ducks took the win by 12.
Sunday's game will tip at 1 p.m. and air live on ESPN2.
