Beavers Battle No. 5 Stanford to Draw

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's soccer team battled No. 5 Stanford to a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon in a hard-fought contest at Paul Lorenz Field.
Oregon State fell behind by a goal early in the second half, but a strike from Mouhameth Thiam leveled the score, and Clarence Awoudor put the Beavers in front with less than 10 minutes to play. Stanford struck again in the closing minutes of the match, as the teams split the points.
OSU tallied 11 shots in the match, compared to 10 for Stanford. Oregon State also held a 6-5 advantage on corner kicks.
The Beavers controlled the bulk of the early possession, earning a dangerous set piece in the 10th minute. Adrian Molina-Diaz had his effort from 14 yards out blocked in the 18th.
Clarence Awoudor nearly broke the ice in the 25th minute, as a quick-moving Beaver counter-attack left him with an opportunity from close range, but the Stanford keeper was able to make the save. Awoudor with another chance minutes later, with a curling effort that was deflected out for a corner kick. The teams headed to the break scoreless.
The Cardinal struck first in the 51st minute, heading in a corner kick to go in front. Thiam followed that up by forcing a save shortly thereafter.
Oregon State equalized in the 65th minute, as Dante Williams played the ball across the box to Fran Cortijo on the left side of the penalty area. Cortijo proceeded to fizz a low cross across the six-yard box and Thiam tapped it home.
David Perez looked give the Beavers the lead in the 75th, but his effort was blocked out of play for a corner.
Awoudor put Oregon State in front with an absolute rocket from 23 yards out in the 81st, but the Cardinal leveled the score in the 85th minute, and the contest finished in a stalemate.
The Beavers will take on Portland next weekend at Lorenz Field. More details on that contest will be announced this week.
