Oregon State Battles But Falls in Eugene
December 11, 2022 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State battled its way into the lead after falling behind in the second and third quarters but they weren't able to complete the comeback victory in a 75-67 loss at Oregon on Sunday.
Four Beavers scored in double figures in the loss, led by 13 from Jelena Mitrovic – who completed her double-double with 11 rebounds - and 12 from Talia von Oelhoffen. Bendu Yeaney scored 11 points while Raegan Beers contributed 10 points.
Oregon State had its hottest start to a game of any this season, jumping out to a 9-0 lead behind points from four different players. Veterans Yeaney and Shalexxus Aaron got the scoring started with a jumper and three before von Oelhoffen added a pair and Mitrovic closed the run with a hook shot.
The Ducks made their way back into the game late in the first quarter, using a 9-2 run at the end of the period to take a 21-18 lead into the break. OSU struggled to take care of the ball to open the second, allowing UO to extend the advantage to 25-18 before a timeout.
After a few minutes of back-and-forth basketball, the Beavs battled back at the end of the half. Martha Pietsch kick-started a 7-0 run with a pull-up jumper before a free throw and two layups closed the deficit to 34-31. Oregon had one more chance to score at the end of the half, but the Beavs forced a tough pull-up to head to the break down three.
OSU charged into the lead to open the second half. The Beavs allowed four points but they countered with eight from von Oelhoffen, AJ Marotte and Yeaney on two triples and two free throws to go up 39-38.
The Beavs had control of the game at the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters. OSU closed the third on an 8-0 run with Lily Hansford providing the finishing blow, a corner three off a Yeaney assist that put Oregon State up 51-50. The run persisted into the fourth with Yeaney and Mitrovic combining for four to make it a 55-50 lead.
Unfortunately for the Beavs, Oregon had one more run in it, outscoring OSU 15-2 over nearly five minutes to take a 70-62 lead with 54 seconds left. Von Oelhoffen hit a three to pull Oregon State within five, but Oregon hit late free throws to seal the game.
Up next, the Beavs head to Hawai'i for the 2022 Maui Jim Maui Classic. Oregon State opens the tournament against Nevada on December 17.
