Beavers Fall to Golden Bears
October 22, 2023 | Women's Soccer
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon State women's soccer team created a number of good scoring chances, but was unable to get a road result, as California took a 3-0 win Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif.
Overall, the Beavers out-shot California 17-14 in the match, and held an 8-4 advantage on corner kicks. Oregon State placed a total of nine shots on target, including four off the boot of McKenna Martinez.
Aidan Brown took the Beavers' first shot of the game, just off target from the right side of the box. California opened the scoring in the sixth minute.
Oregon State responded by creating some pressure on the Golden Bear defense, and Martinez forced a save in the 25th minute.
The Golden Bears netted a second goal in the 34th, and scored a third on a penalty kick a minute later. Skylar Herrera forced a save just before the break, but Cal headed to the locker room leading 3-0.
Martinez was able to force a couple saves in the early phases of the second half. Katie Godden came close to hammering home a cross in the 76th minute, and Claire Jones followed that up by forcing a save in the 78th.
Martinez and Herrera had back-to-back shots on target in the 86th minute, but the Cal defense was able to deny the opportunity.
Oregon State played the bulk of the match without a pair of starters, as goalkeeper Hailey Coll and centerback Paola Figueroa both left the match due to injury after colliding less than 15 minutes into the game.
The Beavers will be back at home Thursday for a matchup with Washington State.
