Fuenmayor’s Career-Best Round Leads Beavers On Day One At Las Vegas Regional
May 15, 2023 | Men's Golf
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Mateo Fuenmayor posted a 6-under 66 Monday at the first of the NCAA Las Vegas Regional, the best round of his career and one of the best in Oregon State men's golf postseason history.
Fuenmayor eagled the par-5 12th hole and par-5 17th to finish the first day of action tied for seventh. It's the second time he's finished with a 66 in a round this season, the first coming at the par-71 Duck Invitational in March.
Fuenmayor matches Spencer Tibbits (2021 NCAA Albuquerque Regional), Diego Velasquez (2010 NCAA Championships) and James Allenby (2007 NCAA West Regional) as Beavers to finish a round at 6-under at a postseason event.
"Mateo played some nice golf today and honestly it is what you are supposed to do on this course, take advantage of the par 5's and a few wedge opportunities," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "Most importantly the mentality the next two days is to keep the foot on the gas and give yourself as many opportunities to make birdie as possible. Mateo knows how to make birdies.
"And it was great to see Rylan (Johnson) join him. A bit of a home feeling here in desert golf; I really felt like this would be a place Rylan could do what he did today."
His first 18 paced the Beavers to a tie for eighth as a team as OSU finished day one with an 11-under 277. That's also one of the 18 lowest rounds in OSU history, and is tied for the third-lowest at an NCAA event, matching OSU's 11-under at the 2012 NCAA Stanford Regional.
The 2023 Beavers are tied with San Francisco and Cincinnati, just one shot behind UNC Greensboro, Oklahoma State and Davidson, a trio of teams tied for fifth. The top five teams at the regional advance to the NCAA Championships later this month.
"It was a nice start for the team," Reehoorn said. "In order for us to make our way into the top five come Wednesday we need to keep the gas pedal down and go get it. It's going to take a school-record performance to make it out."
OSU, as a team, finished at 2-under on par 3 holes, and 10 under on par 5s. Fuenmayor was one of four competitors with two eagles on the day, while Rylan Johnson, who was just one shot behind Fuenamyor, was among the regional's leaders with seven birdies. Carson Barry had five while Fuenmayor tallied four. Jackson Lake and Collin Hodgkinson each ended with three, giving OSU 22 overall.
Johnson had by far his best round of the season, and posted his second of the year under par following a 1-under 71 at the Folds of Honor Collegiate in the fall. He heads into the second day of action tied for 14th.
Barry was one of three Beavers under par on the first day, posting a 1-under 71. It was the 51st round of his career under par, and he'll enter the second day of action at Bear's Best Las Vegas tied for 42nd.
Lake shot a 1-over 73 on day one and will enter the second 18 tied for 55th. He's followed by Collin Hodgkinson, who is tied for 66th with a 3-over 75.
