May 16, 2023 | Men's Golf
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Rylan Johnson had a second straight strong round of golf at the NCAA Las Vegas Regional, posting a 4-under 68 to lead Oregon State with a 9-under 135 after 36 holes.
Johnson finished with five birdies Tuesday in a round that was delayed for nearly three hours due to lightning. He now has 12 birdies over the two days and is tied for 11th entering the third and final round.
Carson Barry finished with a 3-under 69 Tuesday to move up in the leaderboards. He is now tied for 37th with a 4-under 139.
Overall, as a team, the Beavers posted their second consecutive day under par, finishing with a 9-under 279. Oregon State enters the final day ninth with a 20-under 556, one shot behind No. 8 UNC Greensboro. The Beavers are nine behind No. 5 East Tennessee State. The top five teams advance to the NCAA Championships.
"I felt like we played better than yesterday, but ended up with a worse score," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It's nearly impossible to compete at the highest level and make a few of the mistakes we made today which led to big numbers.
"We've got 18 to let it all hang out tomorrow. Nothing to fear. We've got to be ready and willing to take on shots and make putts. It's going to take something special tomorrow for us to advance."
Oregon State finished with 20 birdies as a team Tuesday, including six by Nolan Thoroughgood, who entered Tuesday's action as an alternate. He shot a 3-under 69 in his first round of action, and enters day three 73rd.
Mateo Fuenmayor posted a 1-over 73, and is ties for 31st. He posted a 6-under 66 Monday and sits 5-under after 36 holes.
Jackson Lake birdied three times Tuesday, all in the back nine. He finished with a 2-over 74 and enters the final day of action 65th at 3-over 147.
