Gritty Win for Beavs in The Bahamas
November 27, 2024 | Women's Basketball
NASSAU, The Bahamas – Oregon State picked up its second win of the young season in typical Oregon State fashion: A gritty, determined performance that held Boston College under 50 points in a 54-49 victory.
Â
The Beavers limited BC to 33 percent shooting from the floor and 21.7 percent from three, flying around the floor in their zone. Offensively, the Beavs shot 44 percent led by AJ Marotte's 21 points. The senior was two off her career-high.
Â
Kelsey Rees keyed OSU inside with 13 points and nine rebounds, including five offensive boards. The Beavers scored 15 second chance points off their nine offensive rebounds.
Â
Rees' biggest play of the game came in the final moments when she converted a three-point play trailing 45-43. The go-ahead basket and free throw followed a corner triple from Marotte and preceded a clutch fadeaway in the lane from Kennedie Shuler that made it 48-46, a lead OSU would not relinquish.
The Beavers pulled away down the stretch as Marotte and Tiara Bolden converted 6-of-6 free throws. OSU was a perfect 7-for-7 from the stripe and did not shoot a free throw until Rees' and-one with 1:59 left.
Â
Shuler and Marotte combined on one of the game's early crucial plays as well. The Beavers were on a 7-0 run, but BC appeared to have the final shot while leading 22-21 with a chance to take momentum into halftime. Instead, the sophomore point guard blocked a shot to force a shot clock violation, and the senior took advantage of the stop by cashing in a jumper on the other end to send OSU to the locker room up 23-22.
Â
Shuler finished the game with six points, five rebounds and four assists. She ran the point for all 40 minutes. Bolden added three dimes to go with six points.
Â
Oregon State returns home for the first time since November 12 for its annual field trip game on December 3 against Grambling State. Tickets will not be sold for the game as seats are reserved for students from area schools as well as OSU students and season ticket holders. Tip is slated for 11 a.m.
