Beavers Battle On The Road
November 08, 2024 | Women's Basketball
FORT COLLINS, Colo. – An Oregon State team featuring seven newcomers battled on the road but ultimately dropped its season opener 65-59 to Colorado State.
Â
Kelsey Rees led the Beavers with a double-double, scoring team-leading 16 points with a career-high 17 rebounds. Kennedie Shuler also notched a career-best with 14 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing five assists. AJ Marotte rounded out double-figure scorers with 13 points. The senior also grabbed six boards.
Â
The Beavs endured a shaky defensive first quarter where Colorado State built a 23-16 lead while making 4-of-7 shots from beyond the arc. Catarina Ferreira kept the Beavers in it, draining two open threes for a team-high six in the opening 10 minutes.
Â
Rees led the Beavers in a second quarter charge, scoring seven in the period as OSU made a 13-2 run to close the half leading 34-32. The charge was veteran-led with Sela Heide adding six points while Marotte chipped in five in the second.
Â
Colorado State regained the lead in an ultimately decisive third quarter. The Rams won the period 17-6 with five of their six baskets coming from three. OSU struggled from the field, making just 3-of-16 shots, but won the rebounding battle 14-9.
Â
Oregon State continued to fight in the fourth, pulling within four on a mid-range jumper from Marotte and again on free throws from Shuler. The Rams answered with a 5-0 spurt, however, effectively ending the contest.
Â
The Beavs return to action on Tuesday when they welcome Northwest Nazarene for their home opener. Tip is slated for 5:00 p.m.
