Oregon State Finishes Regular Season with Victory over Cal
March 02, 2024 | Women's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore – Oregon State closed conference play with a definitive victory over Cal, dominating the second half with a 51-31 closing run to win 79-58.
Â
The win secured the number four seed for the Beavers, giving them a first-round bye in the Pac-12 Tournament.
Â
The Beavers saw four players in double figures, with Timea Gardiner at the helm. The sophomore, earning her third start this season, posted 19 points, draining 5 shots from behind the arc. It was the 10th straight game where the future Pac-12 Sixth Player of the Year scored 10-or-more points.
Â
Gardiner claimed five of her eight rebounds in the third quarter and was responsible for 11 of the Beavers' 27 third-quarter points, pacing the team as it pulled away from the Golden Bears
Â
In her first game since her injury against UCLA, Raegan Beers was back like she never left. Creating crucial space under the basket, Beers finished with 14 points to help the Beavers. Proving to be a pivotal defensive player, Beers claimed six rebounds, limiting Cal to just 32.2% shooting.
Â
Heating up at the right time, AJ Marotte was a force to be reckoned with. Leading the Beavers on an 11-2 run in the third quarter, Marotte hit back-to-back-to-back jumpers to join the double-figures club and help secure the lead for Oregon State. Marotte finished the game with 12 points, two rebounds and an assist.
Â
Donovyn Hunter put up 13 points for the Beavers to help define the win. The freshman was her usual, mistake-free self, dishing out nine assists with just one turnover. Hunter added three rebounds as well.
Â
Even without her usual scoring, Talia von Oelhoffen showed up for the Beavers, putting up four rebounds and four assists. Von Oelhoffen was a major disruption to the Cal offense, helping to keep them to a season-low in shooting and and playing a role in holding the Bears' leading scorer, Ioanna Krimili, scoreless. The junior was +17 on the game, second-best on the team.
Dominika Paurova was major factor for the Beaver offense, giving out four assists, Paurova also finished with four points and five rebounds.
Â
Though there are no seniors on the playing roster, the team held a pregame senior day ceremony to say thank you to senior practice players: Micah Grobey, Zach Rivers, Cam Turkisher and Mitch Allison, athletic training student: Charles Rodriguez and managers: Ellie Basinki and Jenny Boyd.
Â
With the fourth seed secured, OSU will play the winner of the Pac-12 Tournament's five-seed and 12-seed at 12 p.m. on Thursday in Las Vegas.
