Chayse Gomez Leads Beavers On Day One At NCAA Championships
May 17, 2024 | Women's Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Chayse Gomez carded an even-par 72 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the first round of the NCAA Division I National Championships on Friday.
The Beavers shot an 11-over 299 at the par-72, 6,297-yard Omni La Costa Resort & Spa North Course and are tied for 21st place (with Ole Miss, Texas and USC) after the opening round.
The NCAA National Championships include 30 teams and six individuals completing 54 holes of stroke play. The top 15 teams after 54 holes, along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team, will compete one additional day of stroke play to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion.
The top eight teams will then compete in match play for the team national championship to be decided on Wednesday, May 22.
The second round will begin at 6:40 a.m. on Saturday and live scoring is available at golfstat.com. The Beavers will start on the first hole at 1:50 p.m. and be paired with Oklahoma State and Tulsa.
Gomez, a fifth-year senior, started the day on the 10th hole with a par before birdying the par-4, 318-yard 11th and par-3, 190-yard 12th holes. She added birdies on the par-4, 357-yard first and the par-3, 163-yard third holes to finish with an even-par 72 and is tied for 38th place.
A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., Gomez advanced as an individual to the fourth day of stroke-hole play at last year's NCAA National Championships and finished in a tie for 10th place, the best-ever finish by an Oregon State women's golfer at nationals. She posted a 5-under 71-71-70-71--283 last season and was one of only three golfers in the field to shoot four sub-par rounds in the championship.
Junior Madde Sund opened the tourney with a double bogey but responded by playing 1 over the rest of the day to post a 3-over 75. Her birdies came on the par-3 11th and par-3 third holes. The Skollersta, Sweden native shot a 3-over 75 in the first round at last year's NCAA National Championships.
Sophomore Kyra Ly and true freshman Raya Nakao both finished the first round with a 4-over 76. Ly stayed away from anything worse than a bogey and had one birdie on the par-5, 513-yard fifth hole, while Nakao birdied the par-4, 356-yard 17th hole and her final hole of the day, the par-4, 364-yard ninth.
True freshman Rebecca Kim started the championships with a birdie on the par-5, 521-yard 10th hole and finished with a 7-over 79.
