Beavers Finish 22nd At NCAA National Championships
May 19, 2024 | Women's Golf
CARLSBAD, Calif. – For the second-straight year, the Oregon State women's golf team proved it's one of the elite programs in the nation as they finished 22nd at the NCAA Division I National Championships on Sunday.
The Beavers battled for three rounds and finished in 22nd place with a 36-over 299-295-306—900 at the par-72, 6,297-yard Omni La Costa Resort & Spa North Course on a day the only team to finish under par was No. 1 Stanford.
The top 15 teams advanced for an additional round of stroke play on Monday to determine the eight teams that will advance to match play.
It's the second-consecutive year Oregon State has made it to the NCAA National Championships. The only other time the program made it was 1998 when the format was different and they finished in 16th place.
Head coach Dawn Shockley has built something special in Corvallis and this team never stopped believing.
True freshman Raya Nakao, from Kaneohe, Hawai'i, came to Corvallis last summer, and not only broke the legendary Ellie Slama's freshman single-season record, but set the Oregon State record for scoring average in a season.
She concluded her fabulous frosh campaign with a 5-over 76-71-74—221 to finish in a team-best tie for 41st place.
Chayse Gomez, a fifth-year senior from Yorba Linda, Calif., capped her sensational Oregon State career with a tie for 64th place with an 8-over 72-75-77—224. She'll go down as the only Beaver golfer to play two years at the National Championships and advance for an additional round.
Sophomore Kyra Ly, who won a share of the Meadow Club Invitational this season, finished in a tie for 71st place with a 9-over 76-72-77—225.
True freshman Rebecca Kim finished with an 18-over 79-77-78—234 and junior Madde Sund shot a 20-over 75-80-81—236.
