Beavers Take 4th and 5th in Opening Heats, Move to C/D Semis
May 31, 2024 | Men's Rowing
MERCER LAKE, NJ – Oregon State exacted revenge for an early season loss on Friday morning, sneaking past UCSD in the opening heat of the IRA National Championships.
The Beavs fell to the Tritons on home waters by seven seconds in March before beating them on Friday. OSU also was just outside a length from catching Cornell, which finished fourth in the six-boat Varsity 8 heat.
"Today's job is done. The varsity came off the water after a confidence boosting piece. The JV was frustrated but knows where they could gain some speed. The 3V had a great start, just 2 seats off of Syracuse for the first 500 and finishing 4th is solid," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "This is a weekend where each race builds onto the next. After day one, we are set up pretty well for tomorrow.
The 2V8 boat also picked up fifth place in its heat, beating Jacksonville by nearly 10 seconds. The 3V8 crew knocked off Georgetown by almost 13 seconds to place fourth in its five-boat heat.
The OSU boats move on to the C/D Semifinals tomorrow with the Varsity 8 opening the action at 6:50 a.m.
