
Beavers Take Down UC Irvine

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State men's soccer team defeated UC Irvine 2-1 Thursday evening in the opening match of the 2024 season. Ellis Spikner and Pere Belmonte both got on the score-sheet for the Beavers in the contest.
Overall, Oregon State out-shot UC Irvine 15-3 in the match and 10-0 in the first half. Spikner, Jacob Huth and Fabian Straudi all recorded assists on the evening.
Belmonte nearly put the Beavers in front early on, as his effort from the top of the box rose just above the crossbar. Andrew De Gannes followed that up by hammering one off the post in the 15th minute.
Belmonte fired from point-blank range in the 22nd minute, but the Anteater goalkeeper reacted quickly to keep the match level at zero. Oregon State had 10 shots in the first half, but the teams headed to the break scoreless.
Spikner opened the scoring in the 57th minute, as he slotted home a deflected effort from Huth. Dante Williams came close to doubling the advantage in the 66th minute, but his effort from 10 yards out was saved. Spikner nearly completed the brace in the 71st, but his effort was deflected
Pol Morlans came up with a big play at the back in the 80th minute, clearing the ball inside the six-yard box to thwart an Anteater attack.
Belmonte doubled the lead in the 84th, curling in a beautiful effort from 30 yards out. UC Irvine pulled one back minutes later, but the Beavers claimed the 2-1 victory.
The Beavers will hit the road on Monday for a matchup with Washington.
