Oregon State Battles but Falls Short in the Fifth
September 06, 2024 | Women's Volleyball
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Despite battling back from a 2-0 deficit, the Oregon State volleyball team couldn't complete the comeback as they fell 3-2 (23-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-19, 10-15) to Nevada on Friday afternoon.
Led by career highs in kills (17) by Annika Hester, the Beavers (1-4) used a six-point win in the fourth set to push the match forward and was helped by Emma Lilo's 36 helpers. Defensively, Yasemin Narlioglu led the team with 18 digs – just one short of matching her career-best.
Facing a loss – and a second one by sweep in as many days – the Beavers were propelled by the overall stat leaders of Hester and Lilo. Each doing their part in a set where Oregon State won but was ultimately outhit, .308 to .250. Oregon State had the luxury of 10 Lilo helpers, half a dozen kills from Hester and five digs from Narlioglu and Lauren Rumel apiece. Additionally, the Beavers took advantage of nine errors from Nevada.
With their backs still against the wall, Oregon State pushed the match to the distance with a hard-fought six-point win at 25-19 to extend things. Lauren Rumel tallied three of her 14 kills in the frame to pace the offense while Narlioglu used six digs to help keep the Wolf Pack at a .061 clip. In a back-and-forth set until OSU held a 10-8 lead, the Beavers used a 6-0 run for comfort, leading the entire rest of the way.
Looking to close the week on a high note and completing the reverse-sweep, Nevada shut down the last bits of momentum from Oregon State. After the sides swapped benches upon the OSU lead at 8-7, the Wolf Pack reeled a final run, taking an 8-2 run for the set – and match – win.
Next time out, the Beavers will take on Texas State in the Aloha State, taking part in the Outrigger Invitational on the campus of Hawaii. First serve from Honolulu is set for 5 p.m. PT.
