MATCHING UP:
Oregon State welcomes BYU into Gill Coliseum for the first time since March 5, 2018, when the Beaver floor lineup put up a 49.575 in the final rotation to take a 196.975-196.375 victory.
The visitors were last in action at the Nashville location of the American Gold Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Classic, placing third in a competition that featured No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 17 Auburn and No. 23 Nebraska. Led by Ava Jorgensen's 9.850, the Cougar bars posted a 48.950 that now has the lineup ranked No. 15 nationally; BYU finished the 2024 season sitting at No. 25 with a 393.165 NQS.
LOW SCORING:
The rules of gymnastics change slightly every four years, corresponding with an Olympic cycle. That means, in 2025, the rules for how routines are scored at NCAA gymnastics meets are slightly different when compared to 2024. That showed itself during week one of the season, as scores across the country were down and just two teams, No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 2 LSU, finished with a 197 or higher.
Oregon State now sits at No. 9 in the rankings after a 195.775 in Oceanside; at the end of 2024, a 195.775 average for the season would have been No. 38 nationally.
All of the modified rules, updated in August of 2024, can be found online at NAWGJ.org.
WATCH THE BEAVS:
Oregon State Athletics and the Pac-12 Conference announced on Tuesday that all five home meets for the Beavers' 2025 season will broadcast live and available to all fans via Pac-12 Insider, the league's Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV (FAST) channel, and the Pac-12's YouTube page at youtube.com/pac12. Veteran play-by-play announcer Rich Burk will call all five broadcasts and will be joined by analysts Alissa Mowe or JaNay Honest for select meets as all home meet broadcasts can be enjoyed across mobile, tablet, computer and television devices on Pac-12 Insider or YouTube.
RANKED:
OSU gymnastics enters Saturday's competition ranked No. 9 in the nation after a strong showing to start the season. With scores down across the country, the Beavers were one of just 12 teams to post a score greater than 195.
Individually, several Beaver gymnasts rank among the nation's elite. Jade Carey is ranked 12th or higher in every event (VT: T-12, UB: T-7, BB: T-1, AA: T-2) while Sage Thompson (T-50, bars), Jennifer McMillan (T-3, bars), Lauren Letzsch (T-45, beam) and Kaitlin Garcia (T-16, floor) all sit in the top 50 after one week of action.
BEAM:
The Oregon State beam lineup struggled at times in 2024 and finished the year ranked 25th nationally, but it was the beam lineup who proved a point during Saturday's season opening meet, posting the team's highest rotation score of any event with a 49.050. That same lineup enters this weekend's competition as the 10th-ranked lineup in the nation.
Led by Carey's 9.950, every single Beaver to routine was scored 9.750 or higher thanks to a Lauren Letzsch 9.825, Sydney Gonzales 9.775, Jennifer McMillan 9.750 and Olivia Buckner 9.750.
SHOWING FOUR:
McMillan was a consistent member of the Oregon State bars and beam lineup in 2024, but during the team's competition last weekend, the Charlotte, N.C., native showed on all four events. Led by a 9.925 on bars, she was given a 9.775 for her first official vault as a collegiate gymnast and had the aforementioned 9.750 on beam; McMillan completed an exhibition routine on floor.
Now in her third season at Oregon State, McMillan's bars score placed second in a meet that featured two opposing teams ranked in the top 10 and marked her eighth 9.925 or higher score on bars across her career.
WHAT SHE DOES:
Jade Carey proved once again why she is among the best gymnasts in the country, winning the all-around in Oceanside with a 39.625 and posting a 9.875 or higher on all four events. Success on the apparatuses as a Beaver is nothing new for Carey, who has quite literally rewritten the record book, accounting for 23 of the program's 59 total 9.950 or better beam scores and 16 of Oregon State's 17 total 39.750 or better all-around scores.
HOMECOMING:
Less than 40 miles separate Oceanside and San Diego, the home of senior Kaitlin Garcia. In front of a crowd filled with family and friends, Garcia played a key role in the Beavers' strong showing, opening the meet with a 9.850 on floor before adding a 9.750 on vault in the next rotation.
Now in her fourth season as a Beaver, Garcia has a career hit rate of 93.6, earning a 9.650 or higher in 44 of 47 total routines.
Sydney Gonzales' hometown of Newport Beach, Calif., is some 47 miles north of Oceanside. After suffering a season-ending injury against UCLA last season, fans were treated to Gonzales' official return to action as she was given a 9.775 on beam, competing in the fifth spot.
Gonzales had hit on 12 of 13 routines before getting hurt last season and is now 99-107 for her career.
QUALITY ACROSS THE BOARD:
Sage Thompson was thrust into an expanded role last season and that continued in the season opener, as the Lehi, Utah, native competed on three events. Her meet started by giving the Beavers some much-needed momentum late in the first rotation with a 9.800 on floor, a number that wound up finishing tied for seventh-best among the 18 athletes to compete on floor.
Thompson added a 9.750 on vault and finished with a 9.825 on the bars, which helped Oregon State out-score No. 10 UCLA on that apparatus.
UP NEXT:
OSU will stay in Corvallis for its next meet, hosting San Jose State at Gill Coliseum. The action begins at 7 p.m. next Friday, Jan. 17.
