WBB Pregame: WCC Tournament Semifinals

LAS VEGAS – Oregon State women's basketball needs two more wins to return to the NCAA Tournament with top-seeded Gonzaga up next in the Credit Union 1 WCC Championship semifinals.

The Beavers defeated San Francisco in their first game of the tournament, getting a game-winner from Kelsey Rees to win 61-59. Like the Beavs and Zags, Oregon State split the regular season series with the Dons.

Kelsey Rees scored one (1) basket on Sunday, it was the game-winner
The senior refused to call it quits against San Francisco, nailing an off-balance jumper as time ran out to bring her to four points (2/2 FT) and six rebounds
Cat Ferreira led the Beavers in scoring with 19 points, 17 coming in the first half on a 3-for-4 start on three-pointers , and seven rebounds
Sela Heide was a dominant presence inside with nine points, seven rebounds and four blocks including two big ones on back-to-back second half possessions
The Beavers and Zags split the regular season games with both teams winning in overtime on the road, the latter being a 66-62 Gonzaga win in Gill Coliseum

DOMINATING DEFENSE
The Beavers are known for their lockdown D under Scott Rueck. Oregon State has allowed 59.5 points per game over the course of his tenure and has held opponents under 65 points in 70% of its games. The Beavs are 267-72 (.787) when holding the opponent to 65 points or fewer and 226-39 (.852) when holding opponents under 60 in the Rueck Era.

FLOOR GENERAL
Kennedie Shuler had a steep learning curve to open the 2024-25 season, taking on the starting point guard role after playing just 9.8 minutes per game as a freshman. There were some early bumps in the road, but Shuler has come into her own over the last month and a half, averaging 9.5 points, 4.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and a 2.68 A/TO ratio since January 18th vs. Portland (last 14 games).
