April 17, 2025 | Women's Golf
FAIRFIELD, Calif. – Raya Nakao fired a career-best 6-under 66 to lead the Oregon State women's golf team in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championship on Thursday.
Nakao, a sophomore from Kaneohe, Hawai'i, had eight birdies, including four straight on the front nine, to post a 66 that has her in first place and three strokes ahead of Jeneath Wong of Pepperdine. Nakao's previous best score was a 5-under 67 in her first collegiate tournament in the fall of 2023 at the Dick McGuire Invitational.
The Beavers got off to a great start at the WCC Championship, posting a 2-under 286 at the par-72, 6,180-yard Green Valley Country Club, to share the lead with Santa Clara. Pepperdine is three strokes back with a 1-over 289, while San Francisco and Washington State are tied for fourth with a 6-over 294 and Gonzaga is sixth with an 11-over 299.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. on Friday and live scoring is available at this link.
Nakao, who set the Oregon State single-season scoring average record last season (72.05), now has 23 career sub-par rounds with 12 of them in the 60's. Her best career finish is a tie for fourth place at the Nanea Invitational this past fall.
Senior Madde Sund also started the championship in red figures, carding a 1-under 71 with three birdies and two bogeys to sit in a tie for fourth place. The Skollersta, Sweden native now has seven sub-par scores this season after posting nine combined in her first three years at Oregon State.
Kyra Ly, who was named the WCC Golfer of the Month for February, finished the opening round with a 1-over 73 that included two birdies and three bogeys. A junior from Portland, Ly entered the WCC Championship with a season scoring average of 71.74, which would break the program record Nakao set last season.
Ly is tied for ninth place and already has four Top 10 finishes on her resume this season.
Clara Alevag, a true freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden, is tied for 23rd place with a 4-over 76, while Rebecca Kim, a sophomore from South Surrey, B.C., is tied for 29th with a 9-over 81. Both of Alevag's birdies came on the par-5's on the back nine.
