Oregon State Gymnastics Readies for Regional Final

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Oregon State gymnastics returns to action tomorrow, competing in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional Final, scheduled for 3p.m. Pacific / 5 p.m. Central on Sunday.

CLEAN SWEEP:
Jade Carey dominated the semifinal round, earning a perfect floor exercise score on her way to being crowned Region Champion on all five events, as she outright won or tied for first on vault, bars, beam, floor and in the all-around. Earning a trio of 9.950s on vault, bars and beam with a perfect 10 on floor, the Phoenix, Ariz., native finished with a 39.850 all-around score.
In winning five more event titles, Carey is now up to 48 as a senior, which ties the program record that she set in 2022 and gives her 165 as a Beaver.
POSTSEASON DEBUT:
Mia Heather entered this weekend with just one career appearance in the top six, earning a 9.825 on against Stanford on Feb. 28 earlier in the season to go with eight exhibition routines, all on the balance beam. In Friday's semifinal round, the San Francisco, Calif., native was part of a critical beam rotation that drastically swung momentum for the Beavers, earning a 9.825 in the two spot for a lineup that counted no lower than a 9.825.
MOMENTUM SWING:
Sitting one-quarter of a point out of the top two after two rotations, each of Oregon State's five counted beam scores were 9.825 or better. Led off by a Sophia Esposito 9.875 and Heather's 9.825, Jennifer McMillan (9.850) and Sydney Gonzales (9.875) set the stage for Carey's 9.950. In total, OSU had finished with a 49.375 rotation score that put OSU in second place with over one-third of a point of cushion.
BATTING ONE THOUSAND:
15 different gymnasts completed at least one routine for the Beavers this season, and among those 15, six have maintained a perfect hit percentage: Carley Beeman (1-1), Natalie Briones (26-26), Carey (48-48), Esposito (37-37), Heather (2-2) and Sage Thompson (39-39).
FINISHING STRONG:
There have been two 49.600-plus rotation scores in all of 2025 for the Beavers, both coming on floor and both coming in the final two meets of the regular season: OSU set its season high mark for any apparatus this season with a 49.625 against Air Force before finishing with a 49.600 against Fisk.
During Friday's meet, the floor lineup sealed the Beavers' spot in the Sweet 16 with a 49.525, the OSU's highest rotation score on any apparatus. Savannah Miller and Olivia Buckner opened the rotation with a pair of 9.850s that were followed by an Esposito 9.850. The back half of the lineup then took it to a new level, as Kaitlin Garcia and Sage Thompson were both given 9.900s before Carey's 10.
TREMENDOUS TRIO:
Thompson and Garcia both earned 9.900s during the result-sealing final rotation on floor, which came just before Carey's perfect score. With the trio all earning a 9.900 or better, Friday's competition made it three-consecutive weeks that each gymnast has earned a 9.900-plus on floor in consecutive order, while each of Carey's last three floor routines have been perfect.
LEGENDARY:
Named head coach ahead of the 1998 season, Tanya Chaplin officially surpassed 500 career head-to-head victories on Friday, all of which have come at the helm of the Oregon State program. With a career winning percentage of .618, Chaplin has won more than 50% of her head-to-head matchups in 24 different seasons, while the team's unparalleled success has culminated in 13 appearances at the NCAA Championships, six Pac-12 Coach of the Year awards, two Pac-12 Championships, two Pac-12 Regular Season Titles and two Region Championships.
25 different gymnasts have combined for 54 NCAA All-American awards, while the team has excelled academically, as her athletes combined have over 150 WCGA Scholastic All-American honors and some 130 All-Conference Academic honors.
WHAT A MOMENT:
In her final meet at Gill Coliseum on March 21, Garcia saw a 10 from one judge for the first time in her collegiate career as she earned a career high 9.975 on the floor. She's had a fantastic senior season, hitting on 24 of 26 routines, earning 15 scores of 9.850 or better and a 9.900 or better nine times. Garcia has earned a 9.900-plus on floor in each of the last four competitions, starting with a 9.900 at San José State before a 9.950 against Air Force, career high 9.975 against Fisk and 9.900 in the regional semifinal on Friday.

SUPERB SENIOR SEASON:
Sage Thompson, who sat at No. 33 on the uneven bars entering the weekend, has been a crucial part of three different Beaver lineups this season. Appearing in each of the team's 13 meets, Thompson has just one sub-9.800 score across both floor and bars. The Lehi, Utah, native has tied her career high FX score, 9.900, six times in just 2025, which includes each of the last three competitions, and enters Sunday's Regional Final with averages of 9.794 (vault), 9.865 (bars) and 9.860 (floor).
SOPHOMORE STANDOUT:
Sophia Esposito was named the 2024 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year last season and has built upon her performances as a sophomore. Appearing in all 13 meets this season, she averaged a 9.795 on vault, 9.831 on the beam and 9.866 on floor, setting or tying career highs on all three events at some point this season. The Melville, N.Y., native has exceled on floor exercise and finished with a 9.800 or better in each of her 12 routines, earning a 9.850 or better in each of the last three competitions.
BREAKOUT ON BEAM:
Jennifer McMillan set a new career high on the balance beam against Fisk on March 21, earning her second 9.900-plus of the season with a 9.925, having previously been given a 9.900 against San José State on March 17.
As a junior, the Charlotte, N.C., native has competed on bars and beam in every single meet while also adding two vaults and two floor routines. She competed in the all-around for the first time in her career against Stanford on Feb. 28, finishing with a 39.075, and finished with a 9.800 (bars) and 9.850 (beam) on Friday.
HALF A CENTURY:
In qualifying for the regional event, OSU is making its 50th-consecutive postseason appearance, which dates back to a sixth-place finish at an event hosted in Monmouth, Ore., in 1975. Since then, the Beavers have won 10 regional events and had a combined 76 individual region champions.
ALL EYES ON US:
Record-breaking performances in front of record-breaking crowds typified the 2025 season. In a year with six home meets, Oregon State welcomed a program record 34,666 fans, an average of 5,778, while also setting the record for highest attended meet when 9,042 fans watched the Beavers earn the fourth-highest team score in program history with a 197.700 against Air Force on March 15.
That Air Force meet was just the second time that OSU sold out a meet and it was the first time packing over 9,000 fans into Gill Coliseum, which came some four months after the team announced it had set a season ticket sales record for the fourth-consecutive year.
UP NEXT:
The top two teams from Sunday's regional final will earn their place at the NCAA Championships, scheduled for April 17 and 19 in Fort Worth, Texas; if the team finishes top two on Sunday, OSU will punch its ticket to Fort Worth for the first time since 2019.
