Late Comeback Not Enough In Baseball’s Loss Wednesday

The Beavers (34-10) were unable to overcome early offense against starter Connor Mendez, who was tagged for four runs on four hits in just two innings before being lifted. The Vaqueros piled on in the third, sending nine batters to the plate against a combination of Mendez and Tanner Douglas to build a lead the Beavers spent the rest of the evening chasing.
Oregon State answered with a three-run fourth, keyed by freshman designated hitter Porter, who went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI in limited action before exiting in the sixth. Third baseman Paul Vazquez added a sacrifice fly that drove in a run in the frame.
The Beavers cut the deficit to one in the sixth, first on a single by Vazquez and then when Talt reached on a strike three turned wild pitch.
Oregon State drew within two again by plating a pair in the eighth on a two-run double by Talt, but UTRGV reliever Caden Wanless closed out the ninth for his first save.
Catcher Jacob Galloway was one of Oregon State's steadier bats, going 2-for-4 with a double, while center fielder Nyan Hayes scored twice, reaching via hit-by-pitch and a single. The Beavers finished with eight hits and stranded eight runners.
