Beavers Battle Hard, Fall at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Oregon State women's soccer team battled for the full 90 minutes, but fell 2-0 to South Carolina Wednesday evening in Columbia.
The Beavers were able to withstand an early South Carolina surge to keep the Gamecocks, who are receiving votes in the preseason United Soccer Coaches Poll, off the scoreboard in the first half. OSU head coach Caroline Kelly made a return to her alma mater in the match, having played goalkeeper at South Carolina in her senior season.
Overall, 15 players made their Oregon State debut in the contest, including five freshmen.
The Beaver back line weathered an early flurry of shots from South Carolina. Oregon State settled into the match from there, and earned back-to-back corner kicks in the 28th minute.
Oregon State was forced to make a change in net in the 31st minute, as starter Ally Larkin was replaced by Alexi Morgan due to injury. The teams headed to the intermission scoreless.
OSU started the second 45 minutes on the front-foot, controlling the first five minutes within the South Carolina third. The Gamecocks scored the game's opening goal in the 54th minute.
Lea Gentry took aim looking to level the score in the 74th minute, but her effort was saved. The Gamecocks added a second in the 76th to claim the win 2-0.
Overall, Larkin and Morgan combined to make seven saves in the match.
The Beavers will head to Nashville on Sunday for a matchup with Lipscomb.
