Navarro's Last-Match Victory Gives Beavers Win

ASHLAND, Ore. - Oregon State got a technical fall from 125-pounder Nathan Navarro in the final match of the night and the 20th-ranked Beavers took a 20-18 win over Southern Oregon, the fourth-ranked NAIA team in the nation, in non-league wrestling Saturday night.
The Beavers (2-2 overall, 1-1 Pacific-10) now go on their holiday break. They will resume training in late December and OSU's next competition will be at the Jan. 8 Texas Duals, where Oregon State will meet No. 1 Iowa, No. 2 Iowa State and Northwestern.
Against Southern Oregon (1-1 overall), the 17th-ranked Navarro took a 17-2 win over Nolan Harris that provided the Beavers with five team points, enough to beat the Raiders for the ninth straight time dating back to 1988.
Navarro's match became crucial after OSU heavyweight Jason Cooley, ranked 10th nationally, defaulted due to an illegal hold while leading 2-1 early in the first period. Cooley's hold caused a match-ending elbow injury to SOU's Devin Cole, giving the Raiders six team points and an 18-15 lead. With the default, Cooley fell to 11-3 this season, he had beaten sixth-ranked David Anderton of Oklahoma State on Friday night.
OSU 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen, ranked fifth nationally, pushed his winning streak to 14 with a 14-0 major decision of Chris Huntley, Jorgensen is now 14-1 this season. The Beavers' 19th-ranked 133-pounder, Ben Richards, took a 16-2 major decision over Justin Thurman, who is ranked third nationally in the NAIA.
The Beavers' Clint Wilson also beat a wrestler highly-ranked in the NAIA when he topped third-ranked Brad Gray 4-0 at 197 pounds. Oregon State's other victory came at 174 pounds, where Nathan Coy earned a 19-8 major decision over Ryan Schumann.
