Kalob Ybarra spent his summer helping with his high school team and a kids' club while he trained. The 174-pounder from Fort Collins, Colo. is new to Oregon State and says the community's support already stands out. He hopes to win tournaments this season and help the Beavers win a third straight Pac-12 title.
What was the highlight of your summer?
"I helped out a lot with my high school's team and kids' club while training and trying to get bigger."
What's your goal this season?
"I want to be able to win some tournaments and get some good matches."
What's the team's goal?
"Win the Pac-12 (three-peat) and take it to the national level."
What have you loved about Oregon State that you didn't expect?
"I honestly love the weather and the atmosphere. From when there was no one on campus to now is a huge difference."
What does it mean to wear the Orange and Black?
"It means a lot to me, because it's the school and program that's working me up to represent them."
How would you describe the Corvallis community?
"Almost unreal. We're in a small college town, so anytime there is an event, the community seems to show out and support all the hard work we've done."
What's something people may not know about you?
"I come from a family that never really had much and got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity from a family who adopted me and took care of me since middle school, helping me wrestle, do school and even raise me to be the person I am today."
What do you like most about wrestling?
"The results come from how much work you put in as an individual, because when you're out there on the mat, it's just you versus the other guy."
Lightning round
Favorite day of the week?
"Monday, because if you were to have a bad week, then it's like a 'refresh' to a new start."
Three teammates you would take to a deserted island?
"Justin Rademacher, Gage Singleton and Nate Carrillo."
Which teammate has been excelling?
"Sergio Montoya, because I always see him working hard and in the trainer's room to get recovery for his body."
