CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State and Wisconsin traded goals within a 90-second span in the second half Sunday afternoon, and that was all the day's scoring as the teams battled to a 1-1 women's soccer tie on Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. Dante Lipfert had Oregon State's goal in the 63rd minute, then Wisconsin answered when Allison Wagner scored off an assist by Emily Stevens in the 65th minute.
The tie finished a big weekend for the Beavers (2-1-1 overall), who had beaten 18th-ranked Virginia 2-0 on Friday. Wisconsin (2-0-2) just missed cracking the top 25 in the NSCAA coaches poll, earning votes worth 26th place, and the Badgers had tied third-ranked Portland 0-0 on Saturday.
"That was a great weekend - the kids are playing awesome," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "We're getting great leadership from the older kids and good performances from the younger ones. I would say no team has played a tougher first four games in the country, and we're 2-1-1.
"That's a huge credit to our student-athletes. Their concentration, mental approach and abilities on the field have spoken well for themselves. These results should raise a few people's heads when they see them."
OSU captain Coray Calhoun said it wasn't hard for the Beavers to get their feet back on the ground after blanking Virginia.
"I thought that helped us stay focused," Calhoun said. "We went back to the locker room and said, 'Don't get overconfident, use this to ride on.' We knew it would be hard work today. We were extremely positive, we tried to do everything exactly the same. Wisconsin was ranked lower (than Virginia), but we knew from how they'd played Portland that they'd be really tough."
The Beavers took their short-lived lead after Lipfert gained control of the ball near midfield in the 63rd minute. The freshman dribbled down the center until she was well inside the box, then fired a shot past Badger goalkeeper Katie Spillane into the top of the net.
Wisconsin immediately pressed the attack and earned a corner kick to the right of the goal in the 65th minute. Emily Stevens' well-placed kick found Allison Wagner, who headed the ball away from OSU goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease and into the left half of the net to make it 1-1.
As the game wore on, the effects of two overtime games in two games began to show in the Badgers play and the Beavers began getting the better scoring opportunities. OSU outshot Wisconsin 19-17 for the game, including an 8-2 edge in the overtime periods.
"We had a little advantage because they played Saturday and we had the day off," Fennah said. "But we really stepped up a level."
The Beavers now go on the road to play Denver on Friday at 3 p.m. PST and Colorado College on Sunday at 10 a.m. PST.
