PROVO, Utah - The Oregon State gymnastics team made a late rally and had an impressive final rotation on the balance beam to defeat BYU at the Marriott Center on Friday evening.
The Beavers (3-1) won the meet by a close 191.500-191.375 score.
"They started strong and fought hard to come back," said coach Tanya Chaplin. "They did a great job. They were six for six on beam, and I don't think our scores reflected how good they did on beam."
The Beavers trailed, 97.025-95.100, after two rotations and took a slight lead after three events and managed to hold off the Cougars in the final rotation.
OSU's Tiffani White and Stephanie Bychowski tied for first on beam with a 9.75, and Annie Campbell tied for third with a 9.675. The Beavers did not have to count a beam score lower than 9.60, while the Cougars had four falls on the event and settled for three sub-9.0 scores.
Bychowski also placed first on bars with a 9.80, but the Beavers struggled on the event as a whole. OSU had two falls and another near miss as the Beavers were forced to count a 9.10 and a 9.20 en route to a 47.125 team score.
While the Beavers struggled on bars, BYU cruised to a 48.50 on vault in the opening rotation, highlighted by Kelly Parkinson's 9.875. Two others scored 9.70 or better as BYU jumped out to an early lead.
OSU improved its performance on vault with a 47.975, led by Lara Degenhardt's 9.725 and Tanya Ricioli's 9.70, but the Cougars maintained their lead with a 48.30 bars score.
The Beavers put together some solid floor performances led by Campbell's 9.775 and Tanya Ricioli and Soni Meduna's 9.725 to overtake the Cougars after the third rotation.
Campbell finished second in the all-around competition with a 38.700, just off Denise Pauga's 38.900 score.
