STANFORD, Calif. - Oregon State opened its two-day wrestling swing through California with a pair of wins on Friday, beating Cal-Davis 28-11 in an afternoon dual in Davis before topping Stanford 22-13 on Friday night. The 21st-ranked Beavers (8-4 overall, 4-1 Pacific-10), who have won six straight dual meets, conclude their trip at Cal Poly on Saturday night.
"We're excited about the meet on Saturday," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "We're pleased with some of the progress we're making as a young team. We see some positives in almost every match, and we're excited about this group and how it's responding to competition."
OSU 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen survived a close call Friday night to post his 22nd straight win, edging Stanford's Warren McPherson 3-1 in overtime. In the extra period, a Jorgensen shot resulted in his getting a double-leg hold on McPherson and he knocked him down to score the winning takedown 58 seconds into overtime.
"It was a real tight match," Wells said. "Both scored fairly early escapes out of the period they started in the down position, and neither scored a takedown. I thought Eric was a lot more aggressive."
Earlier in the day, Jorgensen had earned his fourth pin of the year by stopping Cal-Davis' Burt Pierson in 2:44. Jorgensen, ranked fourth nationally, is 22-1 with four pins this season, and in 15 of his 23 matches he has earned team bonus points for a pin, technical fall, major decision or forfeit.
The Beavers picked up a big win against Stanford (1-4, 0-4) at 125 pounds, where Nathan Navarro decisioned Rudy Ruiz 5-2. Ruiz is ranked 15th nationally this week on the InterMat list.
"That was a really good win for Nathan," Wells said.
OSU heavyweight Jason Cooley, ranked eighth nationally, won both his matches Friday. At Cal-Davis (5-5, 2-3), he earned a major decision over the Aggies' Brandon Arsenault by a 12-4 score and then beat Stanford's Brad Selby 5-2. Cooley is now 17-5 this season and is on a six-match winning streak.
Beaver 141-pounder Shane Cunanan ran his winning streak to five with a pair of victories. Cunanan topped Dallen Phillips of Cal-Davis 8-5 and then beat Levi Weikel-Magden of Stanford 7-2.
"It was excellent," Wells said of the performance of Cunanan, who had lost seven straight matches before starting his win streak in a dual meet at Oregon. "He's really pressing the pace ... he's making people react to him."
OSU 149-pounder Andy Frey earned his first pin of the season by flattening Cal-Davis' Kief Zangaro in 2:34 to end a three-match losing streak. Frey also won both his matches Friday, beating Stanford's Isaiah Camp 6-3.
The Beavers' Nathan Coy was also a two-time winner at 174 pounds. He beat UCD's Martin Cook 7-2 and then earned a major decision over Stanford's Harold Penson by a 16-6 score.
