CORVALLIS, Ore. - - After Oregon State and California each scored a goal in the first 4:26 of their Pacific-10 Conference men's soccer match on Friday, the teams went scoreless the rest of the afternoon and ended the overtime contest with the score tied 1-1. The teams played one overtime rather than the normal two before the game was called due to darkness at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.
The Beavers (5-5-1) jumped out of the starting blocks early when Aaron McHardy booted his third goal of the season to give OSU a 1-0 lead at 4:02. California's goalkeeper, Brian Walker, looked to be out of position after chasing a loose ball, enabling McHardy to get a clear shot to the far post from 10 yards out.
The Golden Bears (2-7-1) wasted little time responding, as Juan Luis Romero gained control of a loose ball near the top of the penalty box and launched a shot over Peter Billmeyer's hands into the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1 at 4:26 into the game.
"I'm very disappointed," OSU coach Dana Taylor said. "When you outshoot a team 31-11 and have 10 more corner kicks, it shows that you had the majority of the play.
"In the first two regulation periods, I thought we played very well," Taylor continued. "I thought we moved the ball. I'm proud of the guys, there were seven freshmen, two sophomores, and a junior and a senior out there (for the majority of the game). We just have to finish. If you can't finish, you can't win any games, and at this level, you have to finish your chances."
Senior James Albert and junior Jesse Servin had four each.
OSU's defense continued its stellar play that has been its trademark all season, and Billmeyer saved four shots on the afternoon. OSU defenders prevented several possible goals by clearing loose balls and corralling Cal's forwards when they came close to any scoring chances.
"Cal had the chance to win the game two or three times in the overtime, but what we told our guys was that we wanted to finish it," Taylor said. "Don't worry about if we give it up, we want to finish it. We tried to attack, and that ended up giving them some opportunities."
The Beaver defense held the Bears to five shots on goal, while OSU mustered only seven shots on goal of its own.
"We've got to do our job by putting the ball away," Taylor said. "We had three golden opportunities that were open net, back post, that we didn't finish in regulation.
"Peter had some great saves, but we wanted win it, so we were pushing players forward, even at the risk of losing it," Taylor said. "In order to win the Pac-10, you've got to win these games. We're trying to make a statement here. It was an exciting game."
