CORVALLIS, Ore. - - The Oregon State men's soccer team fell to 1-5-1 in the Pacific-10 and 7-10-1 overall after its 3-0 defeat at the hands of the No. 25 Washington Huskies on Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.
"We were reacting for the most part today," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. "Washington was anticipating. They're a seasoned squad and they play off each other, they expect the ball to be in certain places at certain times. We've just got to keep getting better, but it takes time."
The Huskies' Kai Carroll started the scoring with a shot from the right wing that he squeezed between OSU goalkeeper Mark Muleady and the near post at 14:13. Ben Somoza dished the assist to Carroll.
Less than 10 minutes later, Kyle Fukuchi gave the Huskies a 2-0 cushion after Billy Sleeth and Carroll strung together passes to set up a five-yard near-post shot for Fukuchi at the 23:59 mark.
"We made two mistakes in the back today (on UW's goals)," Taylor said. "We don't often think about playing it safe in the back, we do things we shouldn't and the next thing you know it's a 4-on-3."
Despite surrendering three goals on the afternoon, Muleady played solidly in goal, making five saves and breaking up several other crossing passes.
"Muleady is a high-level goalie," Taylor said of the freshman. "He took care of his job for the most part and came out on a lot of balls."
The Huskies scored their final goal when Trevor Frobose found the back of the net from 15 yards out at 85:16.
The Beavers finish out their season at Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 12.
