CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State took a six-run lead in the early innings, then gave up 17 straight runs and lost to UCLA 18-10 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The teams combined for 30 hits and seven home runs before a season-high crowd of 1,152.
The Beavers (16-13 overall, 0-2 Pacific-10) and Bruins (19-11, 4-1) wrap up their series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).
Oregon State's Joe Gerber tied the school record for career runs batted in, as he earned his 144th with a second-inning single to drive in Will Hudson. That matched the mark set by Matt Bailie, Gerber's predecessor at first base, from 1995-98.
OSU took a 6-0 lead after three innings, but the Bruins tied the game at 6-6 on Forrest Johnson's grand slam in the top of the fifth and went in front on Randall Shelley's run-scoring single later in the inning. The Bruins then tacked on five runs in a sixth-inning that included Bill Scott's two-run homer, and UCLA added five more runs in a seventh-inning that included a three-run homer by Nick Lyon and a two-run shot by Shelley.
"If we make a couple of plays defensively, we shut down some of their big innings," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "They're a very good offensive club, and when you've got the opportunity to get out of an inning against them, you've got to make them pay."
With one out in the fifth, the Bruins had runners at first and second when Garrett Atkins chopped a ball toward Beaver third baseman Tim Dryden. The ball went under the glove of the charging Dryden for an error, allowing one run to score and opening the door for UCLA.
In the sixth, Atkins led off the inning with a grounder that was bobbled by OSU shortstop Hudson to get the Bruins rolling. In the seventh, the Beavers just missed on a chance to turn a double play that could have shut off UCLA's rally.
OSU starter Thad Johnson took the loss, as the junior righthander went 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out five. Through the first four innings, Johnson had allowed only one earned run on two hits and recorded four of his strikeouts.
"Thad was fairly sharp for most of his outing," Casey said. "We had a chance to get him out of that inning and we didn't help him, and they got it rolling."
Oregon State had gone in front 5-0 with a five-run second inning that included a two-run double by Hudson and run-scoring singles by Andy Jarvis, Drew Hedges and Gerber. The Beavers had five hits in the inning and took advantage of one error against UCLA righthander Josh Karp.
Karp, an eight-round draft pick of the Atlanta Braves coming out of high school, earned the win by going five innings and allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk, striking out five.
Gerber was 3-for-5 for the Beavers, while Dryden extended his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games by going 2-for-2 with a triple and Zach Gordon was 2-for-4. Josh Carter had a three-run homer and Brian Barden followed that with a solo shot of his own as the Beavers picked up four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
For UCLA, Johnson added a solo homer in the top of the ninth and finished 4-for-4 with a double, five RBIs and five runs scored. Bill Scott was 3-for-6 with a homer for the Bruins, Nick Lyon was 3-for-5 with a double and a homer and Matt Pearl was 3-for-3.
