VANCOUVER, Wash. - - The Oregon State men's and women's crews defeated Stanford in all eight races Saturday on Lake Vancouver after windy conditions delayed the start of the day's racing by more than an hour.
The wait didn't seem to affect the No. 11 OSU women's varsity eight, as they defeated the Cardinal by just under 13 seconds in a time of 6:47.5. The two boats were even after 500 meters, but the Beavers managed to open up a six-seat lead by the halfway mark of the 2,000-meter course. OSU left Stanford in its wake over the last half of the course, as the Beavers opened up their lead to a length of open water by the 1,500-meter mark to claim the victory.
"It was a little tough at first due to the conditions and the fact that we had to change the course," said OSU women's coach Charlie Owen. "We handled it pretty well though."
"My first impression was that our varsity eight was a little sluggish to start the race, and not quite as impressive as we were in practice. It was nice to see that we rowed consistently over the second 1,000 meters though."
The men's varsity eight, ranked 17th nationally, beat Stanford by 10 seconds with a time of 5:55. OSU opened up a ľ boatlength lead after 900 meters, and widened the gap over the last half of the course to secure the win.
"Stanford was a crew that worried us," OSU men's coach Dave Reischman said. "We had a few injuries and lineup changes last week, and another one this morning, but the guys did an excellent job of adapting to the situation across the board, from the Freshmen, to the JV and Varsity boats. To have the injuries we had and then to do what we did is a testament to their effort."
The men's JV boat rowed to a time of 6:07 to beat Stanford by seven seconds, and the women's second varsity beat Stanford by over 15 seconds, finishing in 6:50.
The men's freshman `A' squad took care of Stanford in 6:00.18. Stanford finished in 6:11.90, followed by OSU's `B' team.
Both the women's `A' and `B' novice squads beat Stanford's novice crew. OSU's `A' boat finished in 6:48.2 to earn the win.
The men and women both raced varsity four boats, but Stanford scratched from both races.
The Beaver crews will be in action again on Lake Victoria next Saturday, April 22, as they host perennial powerhouse Washington.
