CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State gave up four runs in the final three innings and fell to UCLA 9-5 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (16-14 overall, 0-3 Pacific-10) had overcome a three-run deficit to tie the game before the Bruins (20-11, 5-1) completed their weekend sweep before a crowd of 955.
Oregon State now hosts Portland in a non-league game Tuesday at 3 p.m. before traveling to seventh-ranked Arizona State for a three-game series next Friday through Sunday. All four games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).
In Sunday's series finale, OSU trailed 6-5 going into the bottom of the eighth inning and had Josh Carter at third base with one out. But UCLA reliever Ryan Carter got Zach Gordon to pop out to Bruin shortstop Josh Canales and then struck out Curtis Davis to end the inning.
"We created a situation where we could put ourselves in control of the game and we didn't respond," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "It's disappointing. We had a good club in here (UCLA was picked to finish second in the Pac-10 by conference coaches) and we fought back into the game and created an opportunity, but we didn't finish."
UCLA put up three runs in the top of the ninth against Oregon State reliever James Atwood. Chase Utley and Garrett Atkins started the inning with back-to-back doubles before Bill Scott drove a two-run homer to leftfield to extend the Bruins' lead to 9-5.
Starter Mark Newell took the loss for the Beavers, falling to 3-3. He pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and four walks while striking out six.
UCLA reached Newell for five runs (four earned) in the second inning on four hits and two walks. All five runs scored with two out, including three crossing the plate when Utley rolled a single through the right side of the infield to drive in two runs and another scored on a throwing error by rightfielder Josh Carter.
Newell, though, pulled things together and kept the Beavers in the game.
"Mark threw really well," Casey said.
OSU evened the game in the bottom of the third inning. With two out, Gordon singled through the left side to drive in two runs and Davis followed with a run-scoring single through the right side off Bruin starter Bobby Roe.
The teams then matched zeroes until the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Atkins singled up the middle, Scott then hit a line drive off Newell's leg that bounced into short rightfield for a double to put runners at second and third.
Newell was uninjured, but OSU turned to Atwood. A groundout by Forrest Johnson plated Atkins with the go-ahead run, then Atwood got out of the inning with the Beavers still trailing just 6-5.
Carter wouldn't yield a run, though, and earned the win to improve to 2-0. He pitched 3 1/3 hitless innings, walking two and striking out six.
Scott was 4-for-5 with a double, a homer and two runs batted in for UCLA. Johnson was 2-for-4 with a double and Utley and Atkins were both 2-for-5 with a double.
For Oregon State, Will Hudson was 2-for-3 and Bryan Ingram had a home run to lead off OSU's two-run first inning. Tim Dryden's hitting streak remained at 13 games, as he pinch hit in the ninth inning and drew a walk.
