LOS ANGELES, Calif. - - USC shot out to a 4-0 lead over Oregon State in the first inning and never looked back on Sunday in Pacific-10 baseball at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles. The Beavers (27-25 overall, 8-13 Pac-10) couldn't muster enough offense to keep pace with USC's 16 runs, as the Trojans' pitching stifled OSU for only three runs.
Oregon State wraps up its regular season when it takes on the Washington State Cougars in a three-game series May 19-21in Pullman.
USC (35-18, 13-8) had a 7-0 lead by the time OSU's Joe Gerber added to his school-record RBI total with number 67 in the fifth inning when he brought in Zach Gordon with a sacrifice fly to put OSU on the board.
The Trojans promptly snuffed out any comeback hopes the Beavers may have had when they went on a seven-run rampage in the bottom of the sixth to go up 14-1.
OSU managed two more runs in the top of the seventh when Gerber scored on an error by USC rightfielder Rob Garibaldi and Eric Stark came home after a Brian Barden single. Barden, whose .381 batting average is seventh on the OSU all-time list, now has 46 RBIs on the year.
OSU had eight hits on the afternoon, including a double and a team-leading fourth triple from Drew Hedges. Andy Jarvis and Josh Carter each had two hits as well for the Beavers.
James Atwood fell to 3-5 on the year for OSU after pitching 5 1/3 innings and giving up nine runs - only six of which were earned - on nine hits and two walks. After Mark McLemore and Mark Newell combined to finish off the sixth inning, Nick Renault came in to pitch the last two innings and struck out three while surrendering four hits and two runs.
Anthony Reyes earned the win for the Trojans to boost his record to 5-6, thanks in part to a 3-for-4, five RBI-performance from Josh Persell.
