CAMDEN, N.J. - The 12th-ranked Oregon State women's varsity eight crew took third in the Third-Level Final to finish 15th overall at the NCAA Championships on the 2000-meter Cooper River course in Camden, N.J., on Saturday.
With overcast skies and flat water, a slow start hurt the Beavers, as OSU fell behind in the first 500 meters, but came back strong over the middle stretch of the race and finished third in 6:40.39, just 0.6 seconds behind USC.
"We rowed better today," OSU coach Charlie Owen said. "We gave a good effort, but we still gave up a lot in the first 700 meters. It was kind of frustrating, because we had the fastest second-500 meter time, and the second-fastest third 500 meters, but we had given up four or five seconds to USC in the first 500 meters and we just couldn't make it up."
OSU, competing in the NCAA Championships for the third time in the last four years, had high expectations coming into the race.
"I'm happy in that we did the best we were going to do today," Owen said. "We're disappointed in being 15th - we thought we'd do better and wanted to win the race.
"The athletes did their best, and they rowed hard. They made improvements and made some adjustments, which says a lot, so I'm pleased that they were able to do that."
