CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State rallied to tie the game on Brian Barden's seventh-inning grand slam before falling to third-ranked Stanford 7-5 in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (27-22 overall, 8-10 Pacific-10) just missed a chance to win the series from the Cardinal (37-12, 15-6), as OSU had taken Saturday's game 5-2 after Stanford won Friday's opener 10-6.
"I don't think we were looking to just be competitive in this series," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "We were looking to win the series. I think everybody on our club is disappointed in not winning this series, because if we do some basic things, we win this game."
Oregon State, which has won 10 of its last 15 games, can further enhance its bid for an NCAA tournament spot when it ends the season with Pac-10 series at No. 20 Southern California and Washington State the next two weekends. OSU, which is tied for fifth place in the conference with California, also hopes to make up a non-league game at Portland that was rained out in March.
"They're all key games now," Casey said. "There's not a game that isn't a key game. Playing at USC is a huge mountain to climb, and we've got to find a way to win there."
Beaver seniors playing their final home game Sunday were pitcher James Atwood, infielder Tim Dryden, first baseman Joe Gerber, outfielder Rod Gott, outfielder Drew Hedges and pitcher Mark Newell. It was Barden, a freshman third baseman, who supplied the day's biggest highlight for OSU.
Stanford reliever Mike Gosling started the seventh inning by giving up a pinch-hit single to Gott and then walking Will Hudson and Bryan Ingram to load the bases with none out. The Cardinal brought in sophomore closer Jeff Bruksch, who has nine saves this season.
Bruksch got Eric Stark to pop out, bringing up Barden. OSU's freshman All-America candidate hit a two-ball, two-strike pitch off the outer wall in left-centerfield to even the game at 5-5.
It was Barden's second homer of the weekend, both coming off Bruksch. Barden had tied Friday's game with a three-run homer in the eighth inning, he now has seven homers this season and two of those were grand slams.
Stanford came back against Newell in the top of the eighth inning, though. Eric Bruntlett singled with one out, then scored on Edmund Muth's double to left-centefield. After Craig Hays relieved Newell, Joe Borchard's groundball single to left drove in Muth to make it 7-5.
"We've got to be better at the end of the game on the mound and we've got to play better defense," Casey said. OSU committed two errors in Sunday's game.
Stanford took a 3-0 lead in the second inning on four singles - three of them groundballs - and a bad-hop double by Andy Topham. OSU pulled within 3-1 in the fifth when Will Hudson reached on a fielder's choice, took second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch, and scored on Bryan Ingram's sacrifice fly.
The Cardinal extended the lead to 5-1 in the sixth on Joe Borchard's two-out, two-run single off reliever Craig Hays.
Atwood started for OSU and received no decision for his 5 2/3 innings of work, allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits and three walks while striking out two. Oregon State then used five relievers, with Newell taking the loss.
After giving up the game-tying homer to Barden, Bruksch received the win for Stanford. Ryan McCally earned the save for pitching two scoreless, hitless innings.
