Deflected Corner Kick Drops OSU, 1-0

SEATTLE, Wash. - - Oregon State fell behind 1-0 in the first half of its non-league match against Santa Clara in the Washington Soccer Classic on Thursday night and was unable to recover. The Bronco's score was the only goal of the game.
The goal came when the Bronco's Anthony Chimienti lofted a corner kick towards the near corner of OSU's goal. Beaver goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer went high for the save, but was unable to get a clean handle on the ball. With the ball loose near the net, the Beavers suffered an own-goal when OSU's Ryan Smith deflected it into the net in an attempt to clear the ball. SCU's Jeff Stewart was credited with the goal at 33:56.
The Beavers (3-2-0) came out with a sense of urgency in the second half and controlled the flow of play for the last 45 minutes, but were unable to finish scoring opportunities.
"In the first half, it was all Santa Clara," OSU coach Dana Taylor said. "They dominated the first half, but we owned the second half. We stretched Santa Clara out, but we've just got to finish our opportunities."
It was the defense that kept the Beavers in the game, though the offense mustered 15 shots on the night. In OSU's only other loss, which came at the hands of Illinois-Chicago, the Beavers surrendered just one goal as well.
"The defense has been fine," Taylor said. "It's not like we're losing by three or four goals. We've just got to put our shots away."
Billmeyer stopped seven Santa Clara (3-1-0) shots in the contest, and now has 16 saves this season. The freshman has given up just three goals this year, and boasts a 0.75 goals-against average.
Offensively, OSU's Jesse Servin and Justin Kirk took four shots apiece in a physical game that saw the Beavers tagged with four yellow cards and 16 total fouls.
OSU will look to bounce back when they square off against Cal-Irvine on Saturday, as the Washington Soccer Classic continues. The Beavers next home game will be Tuesday, Sept. 19 against No. 12 Portland.
"We've got to come out stronger than we did today," Taylor said. "We need to make a concerted effort and work as a group to put our chances away."
