LOS ANGELES - Gina Schmidt had 23 kills and Brandi Bonnarens dished out 61 assists to lead the Oregon State volleyball team to its first ever victory over UCLA, currently ranked No. 5 in the nation. Game scores were 4-15, 15-10, 7-15, 15-13 and 16-14.
Schmidt hit .306 on the night and has now had 20 or more kills in six of OSU's last seven matches. She also posted 15 digs for the match. Bonnarens tallied six kills with no errors in 12 tries for a .500 hitting percentage, and she also added four blocks.
OSU also got double-figure kills from Angie Shirley and Joscelyn Hannaford, who each had 16 kills. Both players finished the night with double-double performances, with Hannaford adding 10 digs and Shirley having 12 blocks. Jessica Papell also had a strong night with a match-high 16 kills.
The Beavers (11-3, 3-1 Pac-10) have gone five games in all four of their Pac-10 matches. This time, OSU had to come from behind as the Bruins (9-4, 4-1) jumped out to an early advantage. UCLA hit an impressive .355 in game one, while the Beavers had just nine kills to go along with 11 errors and a -.059 mark in that first game.
But the Beavers settled down after game one and fought their way back into it.
"UCLA was hitting hit hard and serving tough, and it took awhile for us to adjust to them," said coach Nancy Somera. "UCLA is a very physical team and everyone just needed to get used to that. Once our hitters adapted, we kept fighting away."
The key play of the match came in game four. The Beavers were leading, 14-13, with UCLA's Michelle Quon serving to try to tie things up. Hannaford went for the kill, and UCLA's Kristee Porter was called in the net with a blocking error to give OSU back the serve. Angie Shirley came up with a kill to give the Beavers the win and force the fifth game.
"I told the team (before game five) that we've played a lot of five-game matches this year," Somera said. "I told them that we had a lot of game five experience and to just go out there and go for it."
The Beavers actually had to come from behind with the Bruins leading, 12-10. Hannaford got a kill to make it 12-11, and Porter then had a hitting error as the Beavers tied it up. OSU eventually went up, 14-13, on a kill from Lori Daedelow, but Porter got a kill to tie things up again. Finally Shirley and Schmidt slammed down back-to-back kills to give OSU its first ever win over the Bruins.
"We really brought a killer instinct out there tonight. When you play a good opponent, you have to capitalize on your opportunities," Somera said.
The Beavers continue their swing in southern California with a match against No. 4 USC at 6 p.m., Friday, September 29.
