TUCSON, Ariz. - - Brian Barden belted his fifth homerun of the year en route to a 2-for-4, three RBI day, but the Oregon State baseball team was unable to match Arizona's 13 runs as the Beavers dropped to 19-12 overall and 3-3 in the Pacific-10 with a 13-6 loss to the Wildcats (21-16, 4-5) on Sunday.
Barden's blast came in the top of the eighth inning with only one out, when the Beavers threatened to rally from a 10-3 deficit to make it 10-6. OSU was unable to squeeze any more runs out of the inning, and then surrendured three runs to Arizona in the bottom half of the eighth. Barden's eighth-inning shot put an end to OSU's streak of six games without a homerun.
The Beavers held a brief lead after they put two runs on the board in the third inning to take a 2-1 advantage when Josh Carter drove in Bryan Ingram with a triple to tie it at one apiece. Andy Jarvis launched a sacrifice fly to bring in Carter and make it 2-1. Arizona rallied with five runs of their own in their half of the third to quell the threat.
OSU had a chance to potentially put the game away early, as the Beavers had runners on first and second in both the first and second innings, but were unable to bring the runners home.
Eric Stark also came up big for the Beavers, as he moved up to fourth on OSU's career triples list when he ripped a three-bagger in the fourth to knock in Will Hudson and bring the Beavers within 6-3. Stark, a senior, now has eight career triples.
As has been the case for most of the year, OSU's offense was able to put runs on the board, but on Sunday the pitching had a rare faulty performance, as OSU allowed 22 baserunners on 19 hits and three walks. Mark McLemore started the game, but lasted only two innings, giving up two runs on two hits and two walks.
For Arizona, Matt Abram was 3-for-5 with five RBI, two runs and two doubles.
OSU is back in Corvallis this weekend for a three-game series with California with games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Start time for Friday's game is 2 p.m., with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday.
