CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State University dropped its Thursday night women's basketball game against University of California, 66-57.
The Beavers fall to 14-12 on the season and 8-9 in the Pacific-10 Conference while California improves to 11-15 overall and 4-13 in conference play.
Both teams struggled shooting from the floor to open the contest. OSU used an 8-0 run over a three-minute stretch to pull in front by a 27-21 margin with 3:23 on the clock, but the Golden Bears clawed their way back.
Cal closed the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 29-27 lead into the locker room and proceeded to open the second frame on a 10-2 run helped in part by a trio of fast break buckets.
Renee Wright's put-back gave the Bears a 39-29 lead with 15:48 left and OSU would get no closer than within six points the rest of the way.
"We missed a lot of short shots early in the game and we were standing around a lot, especially in the second half," said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra.
Senior Hollye Chapman led the Beavers with 17 points and eight rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, while Shannon Howell pitched in 17 points - 15 of which came in the final 15 minutes of play. Brina Chaney moved into a tie for fourth place on the Pac-10 career blocked shots list with 201, after tallying five rejections in the game.
Karen Vickery hit 3-of-4 field goals for a career-high six points and Jessica Jones added six points and a season-best six rebounds for OSU.
Leigh Gregory was the lone Cal player to reach double figures in scoring, finishing with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting and pulling down eight rebounds. Jaqueline Sanchez grabbed a game-high 12 boards as Cal held a 50-42 advantage on the glass. Nine different Cal players reached the scoring column on the night.
"This was a great win for us tonight," said California head coach Caren Horstmeyer. "We've had a difficult month and have played a lot of tough games, so I was really pleased that we came out and played with great intensity and never let up."
Oregon State wraps up regular season action on Saturday against No. 10 Stanford. The Beavers and Cardinal are scheduled to tip-off at 3 p.m. with the game televised live on Fox Sports Net. OSU seniors Leilani Estavan, Hollye Chapman, Brina Chaney and Krystal Turner will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
