CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 16 Oregon State gymnastics team had a school-record performance on floor, but it wasn't enough to overtake No. 9 Stanford as the Cardinal defeated the Beavers 197.850-197.175 before a crowd of 3,682 at Gill Coliseum on Friday. The score tied OSU's best of the season.
After starting off with a 48.825 on vault, OSU's scores built higher throughout the night. The Beavers posted a 49.275 on bars and then came through with a season-high 49.375 in the third rotation. OSU finished out the evening with a record-setting 49.700 on floor, breaking the mark of 49.625 set at the 2002 NCAA Regional Championships.
"We seemed a little flat (early on), but we got better on each event. We put in some incredible performances," coach Tanya Chaplin said. "Stanford scored a 198.875 last week, so they are obviously a very strong team. Our athletes stepped it up and fought hard. They didn't seem intimidated at all."
OSU did not count a score lower than 9.925 on floor, with Tanya Ricioli-Hebron, Chelsea Plourde and Chrissy Lamun all scoring season-high 9.95s. Angela Morales tied her career-high of 9.925 for the second week in a row, and Th?r?se Videan set a personal best with a 9.925 as well. Heather Justus' season-high 9.85 was thrown out. Plourde's 9.95 bettered her season-high of 9.85 and put her in an elite group. She'd already scored 9.90s on the other three events at least once this season, and her 9.95 on floor makes her the fourth Beaver to score a 9.90 on all four events at least once. She's the first one to have accomplished the feat as a freshman.
The Beavers started off the meet somewhat slowly on vault, having to count a 9.625 from Lamun after Justus struggled on her handspring pike front. Ricioli-Hebron led the vault team for the second meet in a row, this time with a 9.85. Plourde added a 9.825, Videan scored 9.775 and Morales chipped in a 9.75.
Stanford jumped out to an early lead with a 49.425 team score on bars, led by Natalie Foley's 9.95.
OSU bounced back with a 49.275 on bars in the second rotation, led by Heidi Goehring, who set a career-high with a 9.95 to tie Foley and earn her first collegiate victory on any event. Ricioli-Hebron turned in her third 9.90 of the year, and Lamun added a 9.825. The Beavers also counted a pair of 9.80s from Plourde and Justus.
Stanford extended its lead with a 49.375 on vault, with Foley's 9.925 taking top honors. The Cardinal led 98.800-98.100 at the halfway point.
Led by Plourde's second 9.95 of the year on beam, the Beavers put together a season-high 49.375 on the event. Elaine Yoder had a season-high 9.875 for OSU's second-best score. Morales had a season-best 9.85, and Goehring and Lamun had 9.85s as well. Plourde's score held up for the win on beam, but five Stanford gymnasts scored 9.925s later in the meet for a five-way tie for second.
Foley led Stanford on floor, posting a team-best 9.95 to tie Plourde, Ricioli-Hebron and Lamun for top honors. The Cardinal finished with a 49.425 on the event.
Foley, who won or tied for first on three events, also won the all-around with a 39.725. Teammate Caroline Fluhrer was second at 39.625, and Plourde tied her personal best with a 39.525 to place third.
