TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 20 Oregon State gymnastics team scored a season-high 196.700 but was narrowly edged by No. 18 Arizona State's 196.975 at Wells Fargo Arena on Friday night.
It was OSU's highest ever score in an away meet, topping the previous mark of 196.650 at last year's Pacific-10 Championships. The Beavers didn't count a fall and topped the 49.00 mark on all four events for the first time this season after going 22 for 24 against the Sun Devils.
ASU swept the individual honors, but the Beavers had several top three performances. Chelsea Plourde's 39.425 earned second in the all-around, and the freshman also tied for second on beam (9.85) and vault (9.875). Tanya Ricioli-Hebron was third in the all-around with a 39.325, with second-place ties on beam (9.85) and floor (9.925).
"The team's goal this week was to start fighting from the very beginning, and they fought the whole way," coach Tanya Chaplin said. "We had some falls early in the lineup on a couple events, but the rest of them picked it up and didn't let it shake them at all."
Highlighted by a pair of 9.875 routines from Plourde and Chrissy Lamun, the Beavers opened up with a six for six performance for a 49.150 on bars. Th?r?se Videan and Heidi Goehring turned in 9.825 marks, and OSU counted a 9.75 from Heather Justus to throw out Ricioli-Hebron's 9.725.
The Beavers followed with a six-for-six effort on vault after having to count a fall on the event at the last two meets. All six gymnasts set or tied their season-highs, and as a result, OSU finished with a season-best 49.125, topping its previous season-high of 48.525. Plourde led the way with a season-high 9.875 to tie for second, while Angela Morales matched her previous best of 9.85. Ricioli-Hebron had a season-high 9.825, and Justus rounded out the counting scores with a 9.775. Lamun matched her best of 9.575, which the Beavers didn't need to count.
ASU had a school record 49.525 on bars in the second rotation to take the lead, but the Beavers regained the advantage after three rotations. OSU finished with a 49.325 on floor, while ASU had to count a fall on beam for a 48.775. Ricioli-Hebron led the Beaver floor team with a 9.925, with Lamun close behind at 9.90. Morales received a 9.875 score, and Plourde added a 9.825. OSU also counted a season-high 9.80 from Justus.
The Sun Devils reclaimed the lead in the end when five ASU performers scored 9.90 or better on floor in the final rotation. Meanwhile, OSU closed out the competition with a 49.100 on beam, led by second-place marks of 9.85 from Ricioli-Hebron and Plourde. Goehring set a new personal best with a 9.825, and OSU counted a similar score from Lamun. Morales led off the event with a 9.75.
