PORTLAND, Ore. - Shea McFeely homered, doubled and drove in eight runs as Oregon State beat Portland 25-4 in non-league baseball Wednesday afternoon at Pilot Stadium. Eight pitchers combined on a six-hitter for OSU (17-7 overall, 2-1 Pacific-10), which also sent 16 different players to the plate and saw 12 of them get a hit.
The Beavers return home to meet Arizona in a Pacific-10 series this weekend with games Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field; all three games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and on the internet at www.osubeavers.com. It will be Little League Weekend, with all youth baseball and softball players wearing their uniform to the ballpark being admitted for $2.
Against Portland (3-22, 0-6 West Coast), OSU broke the game open with a nine-run second inning, taking advantage of six walks in the inning and three hits, including Andy Jenkins' two-run homer. The Beavers scored in eight of nine innings, had four home runs among their season-high 21 hits, and put up their highest run total since a 27-4 win at Washington early in the 2000 season.
"That's not an enjoyable thing," OSU head coach Pat Casey said of the game. "They got behind in some pitching because of weekend series, and the ball was jumping out of here pretty good today ... a lot of guys played and we got a lot of pitchers on the mound; hopefully, we started getting ourselves ready for this weekend."
McFeely was 3-for-5 with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, bases-loaded walk in the second inning, a three-run homer to left-centerfield in the third inning, a run-scoring double to left in the eighth inning and a two-run single to right-center in the ninth. He drove in the Beavers' first run and OSU's last two runs, and was just one RBI away from matching Ken Bowen's school record of nine, set in a 36-12 win at Chico State in 1985.
"I don't think I've ever had seven RBIs in a game," the sophomore third baseman said.
Uh, Shea, it was eight RBIs.
"Oh!" said a surprised McFeely. "We just wanted to come out and make sure we didn't do any little things bad. We just wanted to put runs on the board and get the win ... we just wanted to play at our level."
Aaron Mathews was 4-for-7 with a home run, a double and matched his career high with five RBIs. For the second time this season, he had a chance to hit for the cycle, needing a triple when he went to the plate in the eighth and ninth innings, but he came up with a two-run single up the middle and a lineout to leftfield.
"We have to get ready for the weekend, and that's what we were doing today," the junior outfielder said. "When you get things taken care of, that's what happens ... we got a lot of at-bats today, we got to see a lot of pitches."
Jacoby Ellsbury extended his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games when he led off the game with a single through the right side, then he added his 13th stolen base of the year. After going 2-for-3, the sophomore outfielder is now batting .426 for the season.
Freshman righthander Jonah Nickerson was credited with the win, pitching the first 2 2/3 innings and allowing no runs on no hits and no walks while striking out three. He was taken from the game as a precautionary measure in the bottom of the third inning after being hit by a comebacker off the bat of Portland's Colton Homme.
OSU scored their three runs in the top of the fifth inning on Mike Hass' pinch-hit three-run homer to centerfield. It was the Beavers' first pinch-hit homer in over three years, dating back to Jason McBride's drive against Washington on March 7, 2001.
