LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Jacoby Ellsbury singled home the winning run in the top of the ninth inning as No. 10 Oregon State beat UCLA 3-1 in Pacific-10 baseball on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. It was the 500th career win for OSU head coach Pat Casey in 18 years at Oregon State and George Fox.
Kevin Gunderson set OSU saves records for a season (10) and a career, retiring the side in order in the ninth. Dallas Buck improved his record to 9-1 as he and Gunderson combined on a four-hitter.
Oregon State (34-8 overall, 12-4 Pacific-10) climbed within one-half game of Pac-10 leader Arizona. The 12 Pac-10 wins are the most for the Beavers since the conference combined its Northern and Southern Divisions for the 1999 season.
OSU and UCLA (11-31, 1-12) continue their series Saturday at 6 p.m. and conclude it Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.
Most of Friday's game was a pitcher's duel between Buck and Bruin righthander Hector Ambriz. Ambriz held the Beavers in check for seven innings and UCLA managed a 1-0 lead after Matt Sharp was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth and eventually scored on Chris Denove's single.
Buck had retired the first 11 hitters he faced before giving up back-to-back two-out singles to Chris Jensen and Ambriz in the bottom of the fourth inning. He also had to work out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth.
Buck wound up going eight innings, allowing the run on four hits and two walks while striking out eight. It was the seventh time this season he has struck out at least eight hitters, and he lowered his earned run average to 2.01.
"Dallas pitched the way he was pitching earlier in the season," Casey said. "His stuff - the bottom was dropping out and the movement was great.
The Beavers finally broke through against UCLA reliever Brian Schroeder in the eighth. Ellsbury led off with an infield single that barely cleared the dirt around home plate, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Andy Jenkins' sharply-hit two-out single up the middle to make it 1-1.
"It seems like almost every night when we need a clutch hit, he comes through with a clutch hit," Buck said of Jenkins. It was the third time this year the Beavers have won a game in the ninth inning.
"They come out to play every day, and they battled tough," Buck said of the Beavers at the plate.
In the ninth, a leadoff infield single by Mike Lissman, a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Ryan Gipson and an error on a ball hit by Tyler Graham put runners at the corners with one out. Ellsbury then smacked a low line drive just inside the third-base bag to drive in Lissman with the go-ahead run; Jenkins later drew two-out, bases loaded walk to force in the final run.
The Beavers then brought in Gunderson, who retired three Bruins on 14 pitches in the bottom of the ninth.
"It's awesome I don't worry about it when he comes in," Buck said of turning a lead over to Gunderson. "Obviously, I give Coach Spencer (Dan Spencer, OSU's pitching coach) a hard time when he pulls me but I don't worry about it."
Ellsbury matched his career high for hits by going 4-for-4, his 23rd multi-hit game of the season. Jenkins was 3-for-3 to extend his career-best hitting streak to 13 games.
