CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chelsea Buckland provided the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute, as the Beavers took down the Women of Troy, 1-0 Friday night at Paul Lorenz Field on Kick Cancer night in front of a season high crowd of 874 on. It is the second straight year that the Beavers have defeated the USC and only the fourth time in program history.
"We created a lot of opportunities and one finally went in," Oregon State women's soccer head coach Linus Rhode said following the dramatic win over No. 19 (NSCAA) ranked USC. "We were knocking on their door all game. Chelsea Buckland finished her chance really well."
For the second straight game, and third overall, Buckland played the part of the hero with her late in the match goals. She scored twice last week against instate rival Oregon, to give the Beavers the 3-2 Civil War victory with the game-winning goal coming in the 86th minute. Tonight, Buckland once again found the back of the net for the game-winning goal, this time in the 83rd minute.
Buckland got the ball from Ashley Seal on the far side of the field, then turned to the defender and drove the ball into the upper right corner of the net past Trojan keeper Shelby Church. It is Buckland's seventh goal of the season, tying her total from all of last season. Seal gets her second assist of the season.
"We were pushing forward and trying to hit as many shots as we could but some of us were hitting them wide or long, just not quite there," Buckland said. "We had the confidence to keep going forward."
Oregon State seemed to be on the offensive from the very first whistle. The forwards and midfielders kept pushing the ball deeper and deeper into USC territory, they kept getting shots but found it difficult to keep the ball on goal. The Beavers outshot the Trojans 10-to-0 in the first half and 14-to-10 in the game. But it proved to be only one shot that would change the course of the match.
When USC (8-4-3 overall, 1-2-0 Pac-10) would get the ball deep into Oregon State territory the Beaver back line would collapse on the ball and clear it out before the Trojans could do anything with it.
"Our defensive effort all season has been outstanding," Rhode said. "Colleen Boyd, the back line and our two central midfielders do a lot of work for our team defensively. Again tonight, we had a great performance from those seven players to keep the ball out of the net. I have to give credit to USC as well; they're a really good team. Their keeper made some very good saves and they created some very good chances tonight. It was a well fought match."
Boyd made some key saves late in the match to seal the victory for the Beavers. The win marks the 20th of her career in net for the Beavers. It is also her eighth shutout of the season tying her for first all time in the category with Melissa Onstad who did it in 2004. Boyd and the Beavers now move to 10-1-1 overall on the season and are 2-0 in Pac-10 conference play. It is the first time since 1995 that the Beavers have been 2-0 to start their conference season. They have only been 3-0 in conference play once, that coming in 1994 which was the first time they made it to post season play.
Oregon State was proud to host its annual Kick Cancer event Friday night against USC in support of the Corvallis Clinic. Portions of proceeds from the sale of pink backpacks and pink pins went to the Corvallis Clinic's Project H.E.R.
Oregon State now turns its focus to 16th-ranked UCLA who comes to town on Sunday for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Paul Lorenz Field. The Beavers look to sweep the Los Angeles school for the first time in program history. The Beavers are 2-13 all-time against the Bruins with their last victory coming at home in a 2-1 win in 2001. With the Beavers' 10th win of the season they have reached double-digit wins for only the ninth time in the 23 year history of the program.
