CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 3-2 win over UC Davis Friday night at Paul Lorenz Field. Senior Brian Ramsey added his fourth and fifth goals of the season increasing his team leading total to five on the season.
"I thought our guys did tremendously," Oregon State men's soccer head coach Steve Simmons said after the hard fought win Friday night. "They competed hard tonight. I knew we would need the insurance goals with the way that UC Davis was playing."
The Beavers got on the board early when a UC Davis defender committed a hand ball foul inside the goal box giving the Beavers a penalty kick. Ramsey drove the ball into the back of the net for his fourth of the season giving the Beavers the early 1-0 advantage.
Oregon State (4-1 overall) had the 1-0 lead coming out of halftime but Ramsey again was in the right place at the right time when Travis Sanchez shot the ball but was saved and deflected by the UC Davis keeper with Ramsey right in front of the goal and he knocked it in for his second of the day increasing the Beavers lead to 2-0. Ramsey ended the day with three shots, two coming on goal and both scoring goals for the Beavers.
The two goal advantage was short lived when Lance Patterson of UC Davis (2-3) scored an unassisted goal to cut the Beaver lead in half at 2-1.
Sanchez was right back in the action in the 61st minute when he got the pass from freshman Alex Eckerson and then beat a defender and drove the ball past the keeper in the bottom left corner of the net to bring the score to 3-1. Sanchez had three shots on the day, two on goal, scored a goal and recorded an assist.
The Aggies made it interesting late when Nick Grigoriev scored a goal to bring the score to 3-2 with 6:50 left in the match. They had some chances late but the Beaver defense fought hard and preserved the win.
The Beavers were outshot 18-to-12 in the game with six of the Beavers 12 shots coming on goal.
Before Friday's match the Oregon State men's soccer team took time to recognize its first coach, Jimmy Conway in a ceremony as part of the Jimmy Conway Testimonial. For more information about the testimonial visit www.jimmyconway.com.
Oregon State returns to the pitch Sunday night when they play host to Central Arkansas starting at 6:30 at Paul Lorenz Field in the final match of the Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic.
