CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team lost to Gonzaga, 3-2, in its final non-conference match of the season Saturday night at Paul Lorenz Field.
The Beavers scored early in the match when junior Travis Sanchez headed the ball into the net on a pass from sophomore Roberto Farfan.
"I thought to get on the board early was great," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said. "It's what we want to do at home. Then we had key moments of lapses. Gonzaga is an opportunistic team and they capitalized on the opportunity."
The Bulldogs scored two goals in the first half when freshman Andrew Owenson scored on an unassisted goal in the 12th minute and junior Zach Smith scored in the 40th minute on a pass from Erik Nielsen to take a 2-1 lead at the break. Gonzaga added another goal in the 79th minute on an unassisted goal by senior Stefan Eysteinsson.
Farfan scored on a free kick in the 84th minute for Oregon State to the top right corner of the goal, but the Beavers were unable to get any shots on goal after pulling within one.
Oregon State outshot the Bulldogs, 8-7, with six of those shots on goal.
"I'm disappointed," Simmons said. "But we're going to do all of the things we need to do with film and cut it and dissect it and make sure we're ready for Pac-10. We just need to get better."
The Beavers open Pac-10 play at San Diego State on Oct. 1 and at UCLA on Oct. 3.
