Men's Soccer Defeats San Diego State, 2-1, To Open Pac-10 Play

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team opened up Pacific-10 Conference play with a 2-1 win over a red-hot San Diego State team Friday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck.
The Beavers (6-2-0, 1-0-0 Pac-10) got goals from Travis Sanchez and Roberto Farfan for the second straight match to defeat an Aztecs team that was riding a seven-match unbeaten streak. It was the fourth straight match Sanchez has scored a goal.
"To get a win on the road is special," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said. "San Diego is ranked in the Top 25 and has been one of the better playing teams in the country. To get a result like this is a tremendous statement for our program.
"Travis (Sanchez) and Brian Ramsey have really found a good form right now. Having forwards who are in form and can find the back of the net is huge. They have that confidence right now and take a lot of pressure off the rest of the team. These guys are making plays and you expect your seniors to do that."
San Diego State (6-2-1, 0-1-1) opened the scoring in the 21st minute when Pedro Adan passed it down the left side to Raymundo Reza who scored to the far post from about nine yards away with his left foot. Jose Altamirano was also credited with an assist after throwing it in to Adan.
The Beavers responded in the 35th minute when Farfan passed the ball into the box and Sanchez hit it off his left thigh into the upper left corner from about eight yards out to tie the score at the half. Oregon State took the lead in the 70th minute when Brian Ramsey threw a long ball into the box that was headed by Chris Harms to Farfan who one-touched it into the left corner from eight yards away.
"Roberto is in a rich vein of form," Simmons said. "He's feeling things out much better on his role on the team. He's a transfer and is really getting more comfortable. The game-winner was truly an opportunistic play by him and he made it to give us the win."
The Aztecs had one shot the rest of the match when Jordan Ongaro missed from 30 yards out in the 83rd minute.
Oregon State now leads the all-time series against San Diego State, 9-4-1, and has won the last five meetings by one goal each time. The teams will face each other again on Nov. 5 at Paul Lorenz Field in Corvallis.
"All of these games have been tight," Simmons said. "It's great to have a result like this against a team like San Diego State. When the Pac-10 dust is settled, you need to put yourself in position to go to postseason play."
The Beavers play No. 20 UCLA on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. PT at Drake Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif.
