Men's Soccer Falls To Two-Time Defending Pac-10 Champion UCLA

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team lost to two-time defending Pacific-10 Conference champion UCLA, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
The Beavers (6-3-0, 1-1-0 Pac-10) were outshot 14-3 in the first half but held the Bruins to one goal behind the strong play of goalkeeper Steve Spangler to trail 1-0 at halftime. Victor Chavez came off the bench for UCLA and scored three goals in the second half to keep the Bruins undefeated in Pac-10 play.
"I thought UCLA came out strong and we were a little bit tentative," Oregon State head coach Steve Simmons said. "We weathered the storm in the first half and had a better mindset in the second half. But they caught us pushing forward on the break for their last three goals."
Josh von Allworden scored on a volley from close range on a pass into the box from Chris Harms at 86:11 for his first goal of the season and the lone goal of the match for the Beavers.
"We got one at the end and we played until the final whistle, which I like to see from an Oregon State team," Simmons said. "But this is obviously a disappointing result."
UCLA (7-2-1, 2-0) opening the scoring at 9:51 when Reed Williams took a pass from Kelyn Rowe and scored on a right-footed shot to the corner. Chavez scored his first goal at 68:35 on a rebound, got his second at 72:36 on a long pass and completed the hat-trick on a shot from 20 yards out. Eder Arreola and Ryan Hollingshead were each credited with two assists.
"Thinking the big picture, to get a split in southern California is big for the weekend," Simmons said after the Beavers defeated San Diego State on Friday. "We are disappointed in the results today and our guys feel they played better than the results. We'll keep working hard and be ready next weekend."
The Beavers return home to Paul Lorenz Field when they host California on Oct. 8 and Stanford on Oct. 10.
